West African Kora Performance and DemonstrationDate: Thursday, April 11th at 7:00 p.m. Location: Meeting Room Description: Sean Gaskell will give a performance and educational demonstration on the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. He will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora’s musical repertoire in addition to some of his own personal compositions. Mr. Gaskell has studied extensively under the instruction of Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh of Brikama, The Gambia and Kane Mathis of Brooklyn, N.Y. Backyard Astronomy: Scanning April Skies Using the New Library TelescopeDate: Wednesday, April 17th at 7:30 p.m. Location: Meeting Room Description: Did you know Pembroke Public Library has a telescope available for card holders to check out? Learn all about it in this program! Our brand-new Orion StarBlast 4.5-inch Astro Reflector Telescope was provided by the Aldrich Astronomical Society's Library Telescope Program and purchased for us by the Friends of the Pembroke Public Library. Members of Aldrich will give a family-friendly presentation on how to use the telescope to observe objects from your own backyard using a technique called star hopping. Weather permitting, we will conclude the evening by going outside to give everyone a chance try out the telescope and look at the sky! Registration required? No
