Summer Reading 2018: Libraries Rock!

Summer Reading at the library has begun! You can join anytime between now and mid-August; just visit us at the library or sign up online through our website. Participation is easy: you READ (or listen to audiobooks), you WRITE (your name and an optional review), and you ENTER (for prizes)!
Who can join? Anyone with a library card! We offer four different Summer Reading programs:

What can I read? Anything!  This includes graphic novels, comics, magazines, books (nonfiction and fiction), eBooks, audiobooks, and more.  Not sure what to read? We have suggestions on our site and our staff is always ready to help find a new book for you.

Are there prizes?
All adult entrants will be entered into a Biweekly Raffle. For our younger readers (kids and teens), whenever you visit the library to check out a book or attend a program or event, you have the opportunity to enter our Library Visit Raffle. Just fill out a raffle ticket with your name and phone number, then place it in our raffle box at either circulation desk. Winners will be able to select a prize from our display case. At the end of Summer Reading, all youth participants win a free book!
Summer Reading Fest: Rescues Rock! (Saturday, August 18th from 1-4 p.m.) Celebrate the end of Summer Reading with fun, food, and animals! There will be many animals looking for a great home and up for adoption at this event! Reading Recommendations
Staff Pick

This month's recommendation comes courtesy of our Reference Librarian Stephanie. She recommends Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, which although written for young adults, will certainly be appreciated by adult readers as well. This Historical Fiction novel focuses on a little-known aspect of World War II - the displacement of Lithuanians (and citizens of other Baltic nations) by the Soviets, as brutally illustrated by the removal of the main character and her family to Siberian work camps. This is a subject that is not typically covered in history classes, and it was absolutely fascinating, heartbreaking, and above all important to learn about what happened.

Patron Pick

Are you looking for a book to tug at your heartstrings? Do you enjoy stories that portray strong female friendships, or difficult family relationships? Are you a fan of Lisa Genova's Still Alice or her new book Every Note Played? One patron strongly recommends another of Genova's works, Love Anthony. This insightful novel offers a unique perspective, that of a nonverbal boy with autism, as channeled through his mother's friend. The character of Anthony reveals a neurologically plausible peek inside the mind of autism. The patron personally enjoyed listening to the book instead of reading, because she thought the audiobook really allowed her to be immersed in the story and mind of Anthony.
Meet Our Magazines

School may be out, but learning never stops with the help of the children’s magazine section here at Pembroke Public Library. This month, we’re taking a look at Cobblestone, winner of the Parents’ Choice Magazine Gold Medal from 2012-2018. Each theme-based issue of Cobblestone delves into a significant event in American history, with topics ranging from the Salem Witch Trials to Buffalo Bill to the Civil Rights movement. Written for children ages 9-14 by noted historians, museum curators, and famous children’s authors, Cobblestone brings the past to life for young readers with vibrant photographs and illustrations, interesting facts, and connections to current events. Recurring features include Your Letters reader submissions, Just For Fun photo caption contests, and Cartoon Connections comics.

On the shelves now, the May-June issue explores the Everglades, with articles on its wide range of habitats, earliest human settlers, current conservation efforts, and diverse wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects. Come check out Cobblestone, alongside many other young reader magazines, in the Children’s room today!
