We have two local authors coming to Pembroke in November and December to talk about their new books on retail history—certainly an appropriate topic for the upcoming holiday season! First up is Boston historian Anthony Sammarco, who will speak about Jordan Marsh: New England's Largest Store on Thursday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m. Learn all about this famous store founded in Boston in 1851, which would become one of the first department stores and eventually the largest retail chain in New England. Jordan Marsh was an important part of life for many shoppers, especially during the holiday season when it featured the Enchanted Village of Saint Nicholas.

Our patron recommendation this month is Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin, the author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. Young Jane Young follows the aftermath of a political scandal - an affair between a married congressman and his young intern, Aviva. The novel traces how the affair affects the lives of the women involved over the years: Aviva, the intern who disappeared and reinvented herself as Jane Young, Aviva's daughter Ruby, Aviva's mother Jane, and Embeth, the congressman's wife. Fast-paced and character driven, this is a book that confronts scandal, blame, and misogyny without sacrificing Zevin's engaging and playful style, which includes email exchanges and a "Choose Your Own Adventure" section. If you're looking for something thought-provoking but humorous try Young Jane Young!
