The Pembroke Public Library building is turning 20 on October 25th! Although the building is still relatively young, did you know that the Pembroke library itself is actually 140 years old? While social reading clubs had existed in town as early as 1811, the Pembroke Free Library was established in 1878 as the first town organization to encourage reading (both educational and entertaining) among residents. The original collection was created with books donated by the Female Reading Society and purchased using early library fees.

Our current building is the library's fourth home. When the Free Library first opened in 1878, it operated from a room in the Burton Homestead at the corner of Center and Mattakeesett Streets. When the rent was raised to an untenable amount in 1890 the library moved to the second floor of the Ladies Sewing Circle building. It remained there until 1958, when the collection was moved into the "Old Center School" (now the Council on Aging) - a space it had to share with the Police Department until 1966! The new (current) building, which opened in 1998, was three times the size of the old one and allowed for much more room to expand collections, technology, and programs.
