Congratulations, Muggles! You have been accepted as a virtual exchange student at Hogwarts! This new Wizard Studies Program is designed for non-magic folk (like yourselves)! But instead of learning charms and transfiguration: You'll be using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to bring a little magic to your every day lives!
You won't need textbooks or a lot of supplies. But you will be reading and discussing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. If you don't already have it, you can get a free copy of the eBook or Audiobook from your library! It's free on OverDrive and Libby through May 31. You can even sign up for an Instant Digital Card if you don't already have one. More information about that below...
In the next few chapters, Harry will start his magical learning in classes like Potions, Charms, and even Flying a Broomstick! We'll be using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math to follow along with fun, themed challenges. So I hope you continue to join us. We're going to have a lot of fun.
Without further ado... Onward! To adventure!
Fun Activities You Can Do At Home.
This time, we have two technology challenges inspired by Chapters 6 & 7.
As soon as she boarded train to Hogwarts, Hermione Granger started practicing a few simple spells from the Standard Book of Spells. She's determined to be a top student and impress her professors! She's also just really excited to be a witch. She was born to muggle parents and had no idea she had magical powers until she got her letter. Can you imagine finding out that you were capable of magic? How excited would you be? You'd probably want to learn all you could, too! That way, you'd be ready to hit the ground running the minute you got to Hogwarts!
We're going to be using code to summon a bunch of Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans. In a future Charms class/coding challenge, we'll be making a feather float!
Get Sorted into Your House
Find out if you're a Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, or Gryffindor
In the book, the Sorting Hat has trouble placing Harry in a House. Harry seems to possess a lot of the qualities that other Houses prize. But he ends up in Gryffindor... mostly because he asked the hat to put him in Gryffindor. Do you think Harry chose Gryffindor because of what Ron told him? Do you think he asked the hat to not place him in Slytherin because of his interactions with Draco Malfoy? Do you think he might have jumped to some conclusions? Would Harry have been happy in Slytherin? Or Ravenclaw? What about Hufflepuff?
Now let's find out what House you're in! After creating your free account, you can take quizzes and access all sorts of amazing content.
Click here to access the Sorting Ceremony on WizardingWorld.com. You can also download the Wizarding World app for an AR (Augmented Reality) experience. Augmented Reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world. Often times, this means you can see both the real world and computer-generated images on your screen/through your phone's camera.
That is slightly different from Virtual Reality where the viewer enters a completely simulated environment (they usually also put on VR googles). But are really fun, though! Have you tried VR or AR?
Upcoming S.T.E.A.M. challenges: Over the next six programs, we will:
Slime-Making in Potions Class (next time!)
Transfiguration and The States of Matter: It's a Solid... It's a Liquid... It's an Oobleck!
Make a Feather Float in Charms Class: A Harry Potter Themed Coding/Computer Science Challenge.
Invisibility Cloaks and The Magic of Green Screen.
Playing Wizard’s Chess with Moving Pieces Using Stop Motion Animation.
Craft-Stick Quidditch. Let's Build a Snitch Launcher!
Engineer a Magical Egg Drop Contraption.
Get Out Your Quills! Cursive Writing Crash Course!
Harry Potter and the Dichotomous Keys Using Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans.
Hagrid can be really helpful, caring, and an all-around great guy... but forgetting to tell Harry how to find Platform 9 ¾ could have resulted in Harry missing the Hogwarts Express! I think he just didn’t think about things from Harry’s perspective. After all, wizards raised in the Wizarding World would have known how to do this. Hagrid doesn’t have much experience with Muggles. So, he just didn’t think about it. Have you ever tried to think about things from someone else’s perspective? Was it difficult?
Luckily, Harry ran into the Weasleys who were all too happy to help. Do you think Harry would have sat with and then befriended Ron Weasley had he not had this chance encounter in Kings Cross Station? Or would they have been friends either way? How did you meet your best friend?
Though we met Draco Malfoy briefly in Diagon Alley... here we get another look at this character. What are your thoughts? Do you think he's a bad guy? Maybe a wizard version of Dudley Dursley? Why do you think he acts the way he does?
What is your first impression of Hermione Granger? She, like Harry, was raised in the Muggle World... unaware of her magical abilities until recently. It's clear that she's excited to learn more about the Wizarding World and to be a great student. But she seems to rub Ron the wrong way. Why do you think that is? Have you ever made a bad first impression?
The Sorting Hat tells us a little about each Hogwarts House. And we've heard a little bit about Slytherin House from other characters. What are your opinions on the Houses? Are you happy with the one you were sorted into? Do you think Harry was sorted into the right house? Why or why not?
We learn that Voldemort once belonged to Slytherin House. Do you think that's why Harry asked the hat not to place him in Slytherin? Can you think of any other reasons Harry might not have liked the idea of being in Slytherin House?
Here we are briefly introduced to some of the other Hogwarts professors (like Severus Snape) as well as the House ghosts. We also learn about some of the features of Hogwarts castle and grounds. Dumbledore briefly mentions the "Forbidden Forest" and other locations that students should stay away from. What are your first impressions of these characters? What places would you most like to visit? Does the Forbidden Forest frighten you or does it intrigue you?
If you want to share your thoughts with your professor: email me or reach out on Facebook!
