"Policing is About People" Civic LabSaturday, December 7 1 pm – 2 pm Please join us for this Civic Lab event to promote greater discussion and shared understanding in our community. "The Police are the People and the People are the Police. At least that's what we want them to be." - Martin J. Schwartz Special Agent (retired) Martin J Schwartz spent more than 40 years at the federal, state, and local levels of law enforcement, and is a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served honorably in the Security Police. His book Policing About People discusses the constitutional guarantees afforded to the people at the core of all police-citizen interactions. Unafraid to speak candidly Schwartz discusses race and bias, fear, cynicism, officer-involved shootings, and the mental health and wellness of officers. The title of the book is the theme of the book as all of these crucial issues involve people. His chapter entitled “The Expendables in America” is about the people living in Marcellus Shale regions, and his view that fracking is less about energy and the environment than it is about people. Most importantly, Special Agent (retired) Schwartz discusses ways in which we can make policing smarter and safer for both the police and the citizenry. Click here for more information.
