Family Fun Halloween The pumpkins are grinning because it’s that time of year again! The Marion County Public Library will be hosting our annual Halloween event Friday October 27 from 6:10-7:30pm. The spooky fun of a carnival style games, Haunted House, costume contest, crafts and more all await you through the doors creaky doors. Games and activities will be from 6 pm to 7 pm, followed immediately by the costume contest winner announcements and the annual puppet show “Halloweeniefied RETURNS” The event is free and open to the public. We’ll see BOO at the library!

Artible: Art & Dessert October's Artible class will be held on Friday, October 13 at 5 pm. This month we will be creating a fall tree! A sign up sheet and a list of supplies is available at the circulation desk. Sign up is required, dessert is provided!

Scaring Up Some Fun “Toddler Time” and “Story Hour” activities in October continue with author spotlights featuring Karma Wilson’s Frog in a Bog and Bear Wants More, Ciara Gavin’s Bear Likes Jam and Bear Is Not Tired, Rosemary Wells’ Max Cleans Up and Max’s ABCs, Neville Astley’s Peppa Pig and the Backyard Circus and Peppa Pig and the Big Train, Iris Van Rynbach’s Five Little Pumpkins, and Jan Carr’s Dappled Apples. During the Halloween sessions, we encourage participants to come dressed in their favorite costumes and enjoy trick-or-treating with the library staff. We’ll also have fall and Halloween themed stories for Fairview Elementary’s “Circle Time” students this month. And, our featured coloring page is “Reading Is ‘Monster’ously Good.”

Fright Lights Adult patrons are invited to join us on October 24 at 3 pm for our “Fright Lights” Halloween craft program. Attendees will decorate a black cat, jack-o-lantern, ghost, or Frankenstein’s monster Mason jar with tissue paper and Mod Podge, and each jar will contain a flickering tea light. Space is limited so registration is required.

Speaking of Books Recounts the author's ambitious quest to run the Iditarod, an 1,180-mile trek of snow and deep cold, and his 17-day journey with a team of dogs during which they endured blinding wind, snowstorms, frostbite, moose attacks, and hallucinations. Winterdance was the inspiration for the Disney movie Snow Dogs.

What Do You Know About That? Trivia Our monthly trivia contest on October 26th, “What Do You Know about That,” also offers up a Halloween theme – the “Scary Good Edition.” Patrons ages 14-up are eligible to participate, and the participant with the most correct answers wins a prize!

Unleash Your Stories Another installment of “Teen Read Week” returns Oct. 8–14 with the theme “Unleash Your Story.” This year we’re featuring YA titles that have been nominated for YALSA’s “Teens’ Top Ten of 2017,” such as Alexandra Bracken’s Passenger, Tim Federle’s The Great American Whatever, and Nicola Yoon’s The Sun Is Also a Star, among several others. “Teen Read Week” is also Fine Free Week so be sure to get those overdue library items returned!

Reaching Out If you’d like to help feed and clothe those in need in our community, the library will be sponsoring Food Pantry and Mitten Tree drives beginning October 9. For the local Food Pantry, we will be accepting non-perishable food items, and for the Mitten Tree we will be collecting various items of children’s winter clothing (underwear, mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, earmuffs, etc.) to be donated to Fairview Elementary. During the Food Pantry drive, for every three (3) food items donated, you will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win a dozen free hot dogs from Hometown Hot Dogs of Fairview. Every donation matters, and we thank you in advance for your support!

Reading Can Be Murder The featured entryway display is “Reading Can Be Murder.” Mystery and thriller titles such as Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party, Cynthia Harrod-Eagles’ Blood Never Dies, and Donald Bain’s Murder She Wrote: Prescription for Murder are available for checkout during this promotion or at any time you feel like curling up with a suspenseful page turner.

Story Time & Toddler TimeUsing our five senses strengthens our everyday experiences. It helps us understand the world around us. Miss Janet and Miss Carol have planned some fun activities to help the children explore their world. Each week stories, crafts, games, and snacks promise to be fun for all. Blackshere Pizza Parties PIZZA! We’re celebrating Blackshere’s third grade class the month of October. Every time a third grade student visits the library and checks out material in any format, we will add a designated pizza topping to our bulletin board. The Homeroom with the most toppings at the end of the month will win a pizza party.
