It’s time for our favorite time of the year: summer reading! And this year, summer reading will be even more fun, as all of our branches combine into one big celebration! The 2018 summer reading program, the musically themed “Libraries Rock!” will run June 23 to July 21 with programs for Toddlers (ages 18– 36 months, Fairmont only), Pre-K, K-5, Teens (grades 6-12), and adults! We have a lot of surprises in store, including our first ever county wide kickoff party (see below)! Head there on June 23 with your library card to get registered, or visit your branch after that date to sign up and get your cool MCPLS reusable summer reading bag! Robotics Plants and Pollinators: Tuesday, June 26, 6 pm We will be using Lego WeDos to model the relationship between a pollinator and flower during the reproduction phase. We will create and program a model of a bee and flower to mimic the relationship between the pollinator and the plant. Suitable for children in grades 3 through 5, or for families to do together. 3D Printing Create a 3D Pattern Create a 3D pattern: Continue learning how to make 3D printer patterns. We will be making objects out of Play-Doh or modeling clay, then scanning them into the 3D printing software and working with the 3D pattern. Participants will be able to pick up their 3D printed objects the week following this program. This program is designed for those adults and teens 13 years old and up. Sewing Zippered Pouch: Learn to sew using a sewing machine. We will be using sewing machines to make zippered cases. Treasure in the Stacks: An Escape Room Experience Join us in June to solve the mystery of legendary jazz singer Ella E. Reader. Unfortunately Ella recently gave her “final performance”, and revealed in her last will that she hid her fortune in the basement of the old library, leaving clues that only a true music lover could unravel. Recent budget cuts have closed the library and it is soon to be demolished to make room for a Starbucks. Your team of adventurers has one hour to locate the hidden fortune before the wrecking ball arrives to bury it forever. Can you find the treasure and save the library from destruction? Summer Reading Rocks Beginning with children’s programs, we’re featuring a variety of sessions for two age groups: PreK (ages 3-6) and K-5 (ages 7-11). Our Pre-K groups will be treated to “Reading Rocks!” the week of June 25 while our K-5 group is invited to join us for “Elvis and the Cornstalk” and “Pop Rocks!” Our coloring workshop is “Reading Rocks!”

Fun for Teens & Adults As with all summer reading programs, the fun’s not just for kids. Teens and adults can also participate in a variety of lyrical activities. For teens, there’s “Music in Motion: Lip Sync Battle” during the week of June 25, and adults can get their groove on with “I’ve Got the Music in Me.”

Friends of the Library It’s that time of the year again… Summer reading time! Pick up some great used books at the Friends Book Sale and have some fun in the sun. The Friends Book Sale is open every Friday 10:00-4:30 and Saturday 9:00-1:00. Friends membership campaign for 2018. Friends of the Mannington Public Library encourage library awareness, promote use of the library, and encourage reading and life-long learning. They promote library activities, enrich the programs of the library, and raise funds. Become a Friend, and with your annual membership enable the library to share with the community.
