In the book Sourdough by Robin Sloan, the main protagonist is a successful female software engineer named Lois Clary. She is innovative, programming a robotic arm to help her bake sourdough bread. In reality, female coders working in the industry are rare, and CODE is a documentary that exposes the dearth of female and minority software engineers and explores the reasons for this gender gap. The documentary is fast-paced, engaging, and thought provoking. I recommend that you watch the film with your children and encourage them to express themselves through math and science. The Livermore Public Library Civic Center is hosting a free screening of CODE on February 15, 2:00 p.m. Expected to attend are members of the Livermore science community as well as students and mentors of local Girls Who Code clubs. After the screening, participants can join a lively discussion of the issues raised in the film and view the month-long exhibit by local Girls Who Code clubs.
