What's happening at YOUR library!
September 2020
Happy Birthday, Aloha Community Library!

What were you doing in 2012? Holding your breath until the Rover “Curiosity” landed safely on Mars? Listening to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe? Guess what we were up to. We made a library!

Our first location opened on September 22, 2012, a beautiful, sunny day. Here we are, eight years later. We planned to celebrate with cake (because who doesn’t like cake?), but, well, you know what happened. Instead, join us this month for a trip down memory lane on facebook.com/alohalibrary.

Thank you for a fantastic eight years, Aloha!

Donation Drive

Have you been holding on to books and movies that you’d like to donate? Here’s your chance! We’ll hold a donation drive on the second Saturday of the month in September (9/12), October (10/10), and November (11/14), from 1:30-4:30pm.

Bring your boxed or bagged donations to the Community Room entrance (facing Subway). You will place your donations on a table at the door. Staff will move the donations to a quarantine area. Due to safety precautions, we will not be able to assist with unloading or bringing donations to the door.
We appreciate you wearing a face covering, since physical distancing may be difficult. Staff will wear masks and gloves to help keep you safe.

Your donations will be used for book sale fundraisers to support library operations and to provide free books to children and adults in our community. Our goal is to get books into people’s hands! Thank you so much for your donations!

STEAM Take and Make: Optical Illusions
Monday, September 14th through Saturday, September 19th

What is an optical illusion? Optical illusions can use color, light and patterns to create images that can be deceptive or misleading to our brains. Explore and create your own optical illusions with our STEAM Take and Make!  Scientists have worked very hard for many years to understand how optical illusions work, yet in many cases we still don’t know exactly how our brain and eyes work together to create these illusions. But who knows? Maybe you will grow up to be part of the research team that cracks the code!

Get your take and make from the library during curbside services, Monday-Wednesday, 3-6 pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-1 pm. Just walk up to the table in front of the library and let us know you’re there for a take and make!

LEGO Challenge: Superhero Mosaic

In September, we’re celebrating Library Card Sign Up Month with a superhero fueled challenge inspired by our library ambassador Wonder Woman. Who is your favorite superhero? Create a LEGO mosaic portrait of a superhero like Wonder Woman, or make up your own! What are their special powers?! For inspiration and ideas on how to make your mosaic, check out these templates.

Take a photo of your mosaic and have an adult post it on social media and tag the library or send it to info@alohalibrary.org for a chance to win a $10 e-gift certificate to the LEGO store! Please share your creations by Sunday, October 4 to be eligible for the prize drawing. Winners will be notified the following week.
