Evenings with Poe Thursdays at 6:00pm throughout October We are getting in the spirit of the haunting season with select readings from master of horror, mystery, and the macabre, Edgar Allen Poe! Join library staff every week as they share their favorite tales of intrigue from the well-known American writer and poet. Readings drop at 6:00 pm every Thursday in October. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch them all. Recommended for ages 10+.

Messy(ish) Arts and Crafts Take and Make Monday, October 5th through Saturday, October 10th It’s officially fall! What says more fall than festive squash? Get into the spirit of the season with your very own mini pumpkin to paint any way you’d like! We’ll supply the paint, paintbrush, and pumpkin! Limited quantities available on a first come, first served basis. Please share pictures of your completed masterpiece with us by emailing info@alohalibrary.org or tagging us on social media. Get your take and make from the library during curbside services, Monday-Wednesday, 3-6 pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-1 pm. Just walk up to the table in front of the library and let us know you’re there for a take and make! While supplies last.

Virtual Family Storytime Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:00am Storytime is back from its break with a few changes! Virtual Preschool Storytime is now Virtual Family Storytime, a fun filled live program for all ages with stories, songs, and rhymes geared toward getting kids hooked on reading. Come read, sing, dance, and play with us on Zoom here. We cannot wait to see you! Virtual Pajama Storytime Fridays from 10:30 to 11:00am We have made a few changes to the names of our stortyimes, but don’t worry! Pajama Storytime still features everything you loved about Early Literacy Live and more. Wear your comfiest pajamas and join librarians Katie and Jesse every Friday at 10:30 am! We’ll see our friends Narwhal and Unicorn, read and sing together, and look for Little Mouse. Use this link to access the meeting on Friday. Note that this is a different Zoom invitation than we have been using, so make sure to update! We hope to see you there! Pajama Storytime: Halloween Takeover! Friday, October 30th from 10:30 to 11:00am We’re getting in the ghostly spirit with a spooktacular takeover just in time for Halloween! Wear your costume and join ghoul-brarians Jesse and Katie for songs, stories, and fun in celebration of our favorite holiday. Use this link to access the meeting on Friday. STEAM Take and Make: Penny Science Monday, October 19th through Saturday, October 24th Pennies might be the least appreciated coin, but they make for great science! This month, we’ll use pennies to explore basic concepts around sound, surface tension, and cleaning products using balloons, hex nuts, water, and hot sauce! Get your take and make from the library during curbside services, Monday-Wednesday, 3-6 pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-1 pm. LEGO Challenge: Ghoulish Creations It’s the spookiest week of the year! It’s no secret that Halloween is a favorite holiday at the library, so this month we’d love it if you’d make the scariest, most hair-raising LEGO or DUPLO creation imaginable! Want a little extra challenge? Use just 30 bricks! Take a photo of your ghastly build and have an adult post it on social media and tag the library or send it to info@alohalibrary.org for a chance to win a $10 e-gift certificate to the LEGO store! Please share your creations by Sunday, November 1 to be eligible for the prize drawing. Winners will be notified the following week.

Trick or Treat Take and Make Monday, October 26 through Saturday, October 31st We know Halloween will be really different this year, but we still want to celebrate together! Stop by the library during curbside hours from October 26-31 (Monday-Wednesday, 3-6 pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-1 pm) for a goody bag complete with treats, a craft, and more! Available while supplies last. Don’t forget to join spooktacular librarians Jesse and Katie for a special Halloween-themed Pajama Storytime live on Zoom on Friday, October 30 at 10:30 AM. Wear your favorite costumes and get ready for some not-too-scary stories, music, and fun!

Dial-In Book Excerpts All month For adults. We’re temporarily dedicating a phone line to book excerpts! Dial us up at 971-245-7734 to hear a brief reading of an excerpt from a book that’s set somewhere else. If you enjoy it and want to read more for yourself, you can leave us a message after the end of the recording, and we’ll be happy to help you request a copy to check out. We’ll be posting new recordings frequently for you to listen to, so call back regularly to travel someplace new!

Kanopy Film Club Fridays, October 2nd and 16th at 2pm / 4pm For adults. Twice a month, we host a discussion of a movie that is available through Kanopy, the movie streaming service that is free with your library card (wccls.kanopy.com). We’ll post a link to each movie on our Facebook page (facebook.com/AlohaLibrary) in advance, if you’d like to watch it ahead of time, and we’ll share the movie over Zoom starting at 2pm for a more communal viewing experience. Museum at (Our Place) Take and Make Monday, October 12th through Saturday, October 17th Have you been to the windows in the library’s Community Room to see the display the Museum at (Our Place) from Five Oaks Museum yet? Check it out and then swing by the front of the library to pick up the supplies you’ll need to create your own tree ring landscapes inspired by The Sun Bathed Everything by Angelica Trimble Yanu. Crafternoon: Coffee, Conversation, and Coloring Thursday, October 15th from 4:00 to 5:00pm For adults. This monthly program for adults alternates between guided craft projects and relaxing coloring sessions. Grab a beverage of your choice and join our conversation whether you’re participating in the coloring or not! Bring your own coloring sheets or stop by the library during curbside service hours (Mon-Wed @ 3-6pm, Thu-Sat @ 10am-1pm) to pick some up. Join us on Zoom here! Ballot Measure Questions Answered Thursday, October 15th from 6:00 to 7:00pm State-wide ballot measures are a vital aspect of democracy with effects that are felt directly by Oregonians. Evaluating the arguments for each side can be difficult, so join us for a virtual Q&A session about this election’s ballot measures with Eric Schmidt of Washington County’s chapter of the nonpartisan League of Women Voters. He will address anything you might be curious about with clarity and objectivity.
