Summer Reading 2019Have you signed up for Summer Reading yet? All ages can stop by the library to sign up through July 31st to participate. Visit the children and teen summer reading pages on our website to learn more about the exciting programs and events offered by the library throughout the remainder of the summer. Kelli Welli Tuesday, July 2nd, from 11:00am to 12:00pm All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Kelli Welli writes songs for kids and the people who love them. This interactive musical performance will encourage kids and their grown-ups to sing and dance and play along with songs that tell stories, teach tools, and celebrate the love we feel for the little people in our lives!

Takohachi’s Q-ensemble: Japanese Drum and Dance Tuesday, July 9th, from 11:00am to 12:00pm All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Join Portland’s favorite Japanese Taiko group “Q-ensemble” for an event filled with cultural, musical, and educational essences for children of all ages and their families. This show features powerful Taiko drums, beautiful bamboo flute, unique Shamisen (three string), dance, story, and more!

STEM Lab: Astronomy Wednesday, July 10th from 2:30 to 4:00pm For children ages 5 to 13. All children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Let’s learn about all things space this summer while we explore “A Universe of Stories.” Next up: the moon! We’ll learn all about the moon as we learn how craters are formed and construct cardboard moon habitats!

Nathalia Tuesday, July 16th from 11:00am to 12:00pm For all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children).
Children’s songwriter Nathalia uses a creative bilingual approach to engage families in an interactive musical performance. From themes like space exploration to cruising down the Amazon River, her infectious songs will have families singing, dancing, and even learning a little Spanish, in this fun multicultural experience!

Nature Mobile Wednesday, July 17th from 3:30 to 4:30pm For all ages. All children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children).
Drop in to learn about local flora and fauna from the knowledgeable nature experts of Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District.

Our Place in Space Tuesday, July 23rd from 11:00am to 12:00am For all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Ever wonder how Earth fits in among the other planets, stars, and galaxies? Join the Museum of Natural and Cultural History for science experiments and fun activities to explore what makes our planet special and discover how we can help keep it that way.

LEGO Free Play Wednesday, July 24th from 2:30 to 4:00pm For children ages 5 to 13. All children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Come explore your creativity with LEGOs every 4th Wednesday of the month! Spend the afternoon creating masterpieces out of the legendary colorful building blocks. We’ll provide the LEGOs; you provide imagination!

Family Movies in Space Thursday, July 25th at 4:00pm All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Enjoy free, family friendly science fiction movies from the past and present all summer long at the library! Get ready to jam in July as evil aliens face off against our earthly heroes in an epic basketball showdown.

Aliens: Escape from Earth Tuesday, July 30th from 11:00am to 12:00pm For all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult (minimum 1 adult per 5 children). Science Tellers brings an interactive alien adventure that combines storytelling and science in an action-packed and educational performance that uses real experiments for special effects. It’s totally out of this world!

Reading Buddies Mondays, July 8th and 22th from 5:00 to 6:00pm For ages 5 to 13 years. Need practice reading? Sign up for a session of Reading Buddies at the Aloha Community Library! Kids can improve their reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a trained therapy animal. Read with a dog on second Mondays, or with a cat on fourth Mondays. Sessions are 15 minutes each between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Please visit the library or call us at (503) 259-0185 to register.

Toddler Storytime Mondays from 10:30 to 11:00am For ages 16 to 36 months. Toddler Storytime takes place every Monday at 10:30 am! Join us for stories, songs, rhymes, dances, and activities aimed at children between the ages of 18 and 36 months. Adults are expected to sit with children and participate.

Family Storytime Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:00am For ages 3 to 6 years. An interactive storytime for children and their grown-ups filled with stories, songs, rhymes, and activities geared toward getting kids ready to read. Adults are expected to sit with children and participate.

Create-A-Constellation Now through August For all ages. We’ve updated our constellation display to show a different part of the night sky! Stop by any time during open hours this summer and see what new constellations you can spot or design. Outline a constellation you recognize, or come up with your own unique creations!

Teen Tech Lab Tuesday, July 2nd from 3:30 to 5:00pm For ages 10-18 only. Whether you want to play Fortnite with your friends or try out some new tech gadgets, the Teen Tech Lab is for you! We’ll provide laptops, robots, makey makey boards, and more. Just bring yourself and come ready for some fun!

Anime Your Way Workshop Thursday, July 18th from 2:00 to 4:00pm Learn how to create an anime character from scratch, no matter your drawing level! Using simple shapes and easy to understand instructions, gain the knowledge and confidence to create your very own unique anime characters from former Simpson’s artist Carlos Nieto III. No registration necessary.

Citizen Science Mission: Space! Thursday, July 11th from 4:30 to 5:30pm For teens and adults. Some science research projects involve huge amounts of data – more than professional researchers can sort through on their own. Join us this summer to spend some time helping to contribute to real academic research projects happening in the field of astronomy! No specialized background, training, or expertise is needed to pitch in.

Space Origami Tuesday, July 16th from 3:30 to 5:30pm For teens and adults. Spaces limited; please visit the library or call us at (503) 259-0185 to register. Did you know that the concept of folding paper has been used in space to build solar arrays? Join us to learn about the collapsible folding methods used in space from origami artist Yuki Martin! You’ll be able to try your hand at one of the folding patterns, as well as other space-themed origami designs.

Writers Group Saturday, July 20th from 12:30 to 3:00pm Drop in for a quiet place away from home to hit your word count goal, or to socialize with other local writers. Red Tail Angels: Legendary American Aviators Wednesday, July 24th from 6:30 to 7:30pm The first black fighter pilots to fly and fight for their country, the “Red Tail Angels” blazed a trail of glory in the frozen skies over Germany in World War II, fighting Nazi tyranny abroad and helping to end segregation in the Armed Forces at home. Join us to learn about these historically important pilots from dynamic speaker and author Sig Unander in a presentation that promises to engage, educate, and inspire you.
