Recognize Your Favorite Library Staff MemberLooking to give a shout-out to your favorite librarian? Take a moment to recognize an MCPL staff member who regularly goes above and beyond by nominating them for the John Ferguson Legacy Award for Outstanding Library Service, which is bestowed each year to an MCPL staff member who exceeds expectations. The award will be given during Mid-Continent Public Library’s annual Legacy Luncheon on Friday, June 15, at the Stoney Creek Hotel & Conference Center in Independence, featuring special guest Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club and Books for Living. MCPL's Story Center Celebrates Campaign Kick-Off April 6Join Mid-Continent Public Library on Friday, April 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Woodneath Library Center for free family fun as The Story Center kicks off a fundraising campaign to transform the historic house on the Woodneath property into a state-of-the-art center for storytellers of all ages. Award-winning kid rocker Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove will give a high-energy performance, and families can enjoy a petting zoo, cotton candy and popcorn, face painting, and balloons! Swap Cash for Cans During Food for FinesGrab those extra cans of green beans, tuna, and other nonperishable food items from your pantry, and head down to your local Mid-Continent Public Library branch to clear out your Library fines and fees! MCPL’s Food for Fines program will run from Monday, May 7, through Sunday, May 13. Each food item you donate will count as $1 toward your overdue fines and replacement card charges (up to $10). Since the program’s launch, MCPL has collected more than 84,000 food items for local charities. .

April is Jazz Appreciation Month! All April, the Library will offer a variety of informative and entertaining jazz events, including performances by: Tom’s Town Quintet, a group made up of five members of Kansas City’s Vine Street Orchestra. Millie Edwards, one of Kansas City’s best-kept jazz secrets. MCPL will also offer Kansas City Jazz: The Golden Years, an exploration of the golden years of Kansas City jazz with historian Kent Rausch. G'day, Mate! Join MCPL "Down Under" with the KC Zoomobile Go on an Australian-themed adventure with the Kansas City Zoo! During April, MCPL branches will offer the KC Zoomobile: Australia program for kids ages five and up. Learn Aussie folklore and culture, and meet some animal friends from "down under." Dark Was Their Journey: An Original Play at MCPL Enjoy an original work by Kansas City playwright Jacqee Gafford at the Midwest Genealogy Center on April 11. Set in a seaside resort, Dark Was Their Journey spends an afternoon with the widows of Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X, reflecting on their life journeys. The play features performances by Lynn King as Coretta Scott King, Karen Cline Wright as Myrlie Evers-Williams, and Jacqee Gafford as Betty Shabazz. This program is free to attend and open to all ages, but registration is required.
