SAGINAW, MI

Whether your children are going to school in person or on the web this year, the Public Libraries of Saginaw wants to get them off on the right foot for the 2020-21 year.

This September, the Public Libraries of Saginaw is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month by giving away bags of free school supplies to K-8 students who can show staff their Public Libraries of Saginaw card or sign up for a new one.

Library Card Sign-Up Month began in 1987. The American Library Association and libraries nationwide celebrate it each September as a time to remind parents, caregivers and students that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

Since the goal of Library Card Sign-Up Month is to make sure every child signs up for their own library card, Public Libraries of Saginaw staff will work with students to make sure they can sign up for a free new card and get their school supplies -- even if they have an old card with some fees and fines on it.

For information about residency requirements and what to bring with you to sign up for a library card, stop by or call any library branch or visit www.saginawlibrary.org/borrow/get-library-card online.

Supplies are limited, so we ask that each student only take one bag during the month.

You will also notice DC’s Wonder Woman appearing as Library Card Sign-up Month Honorary Chair this year. The founding member of the Justice League is embarking on a new mission to champion the power of a library card. Wonder Woman is known for strength, compassion and truth. Armed with the Lasso of Truth, Wonder Woman makes a perfect ambassador to support the value of learning and the role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities through education.
