Staff Pick of the Month We wanted to share a favorite book from one of our staff members with you each month. This month we are highlighting The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis picked by our library director Robin! Originally published in 1983, The Queen’s Gambit was dramatized by Netflix this year in an original series. It tells the story of Beth Harmon, a fictional chess prodigy, set in the 1950’s and 60’s. Harmon’s fictional chess career can be compared to the real Bobby Fischer’s in many respects. The Netflix show follows the book quite closely, but amplifies and sensationalizes Harmon’s addictions while the book addresses them more pragmatically. Read the book for insight into Harmon’s inner dialog and feelings as she matures into a competitive chess champion. Author Walter Tevis also wrote The Hustler, The Color of Money, and The Man Who Fell to Earth. (If you are interested in reading more from Tevis and WCCLS libraries do not own the title you are looking for try submitting an interlibrary loan request!) Libraries are adding more copies of The Queen’s Gambit to meet the surge in demand, and the downloadable audio and print versions are available on Libby
