Historical Mysteries - Solve a crime in another time

Historical mysteries are a subgenre of historical fiction and mystery fiction, giving the reader a window into life and detecting in times past. Ellis Peters is credited by many for first making historical mysteries popular with her Brother Cadfael series. Set in 12th century England, Brother Cadfael solves mysteries and murders using skills honed in his prior life as a sailor and soldier, while tending the abbey herb garden and trying to avoid the wrath of Prior Robert, who does not approve of such worldly goings on. Background to the stories is the ongoing battle for England's crown between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. As their war rages, lives in the village and abbey are thrown into chaos and partisan activity, a perfect breeding ground for theft and murder.

You can find historical mysteries for just about any time period you'd like: visit Ancient Egypt in 15th century BCE with Lauren Haney or Paul Doherty; the Roman Republic, from first century BCE through the late 2nd century CE is brought to us by John Maddox Roberts, Lindsey Davis, and Steven Saylor.

Paul Doherty also has series set in England's 15th and 16th century, as does C.J. Sansom and S.J. Parris. If you'd like something a little closer to home, check out Oakley Hall's stories set in San Francisco in the late 19th century. Whatever time you choose, somewhere there will be a mystery; and Ida has the tools to help you find them.

From our web page, click on 'Books, Media & More,' then 'Explore What's Next.' At top of the page is a link to Discover Books with Novelist. Click on Mysteries in the far left column, then click on Historical Mysteries in the pop-up menu for some recommended reads. Or in the Keyword search box enter GN mystery AND GN historical, for pages of suggestions. You can refine those results using selection tools in the left panel that include theme, character, or time period. Their time period range is limited, going
only from the 1850's through the 1940's.

The historical index on StopYoureKillingMe.com, also found on the Explore What's Next page, gives a much wider range of time periods, from ancient Egypt through the 1990s. Once you've chosen an era to browse, you'll find a listing of authors name; character name(s), and brief description of character and setting. Clicking on the character name gives a list of their stories, in publication order.
