Ghosts of Highway 20 - a True Crime Narrative Tuesday March 3rd at 6:30 pm - a Cultural Series Event Over two decades, four women disappeared and one was brutally attacked off the same stretch of road in rural Oregon. Their stories have another connection: One man is linked to all five crimes. Ghosts of Highway 20 is a true-crime narrative about a previously unknown serial killer in Oregon named John Ackroyd. Reporter Noelle Crombie, videographer Dave Killen, and photographer Beth Nakamura will offer a behind the scenes look at the year-long project, which revealed for the first time that Ackroyd was responsible for the crimes, and discuss how they investigated and organized their five-part documentary and print series focusing on the victims.

Why DIY? Self-sufficiency and American life Saturday March 21st 1pm Are we as self-sufficient as we can be? As we should be? What are the pleasures and pitfalls of doing it yourself? Join food educator, recipe developer, and travel writer Jennifer Burns Bright for this Oregon Humanities Conversation Project workshop exploring why we strive to be makers and doers in a world that provides more conveniences than ever before. How might the “new industrial revolution” of tinkerers and crafters affect American schools and workplaces? How do maker spaces or skills courses foster greater engagement and involvement? What could be left behind when we increase self-sufficiency in a community? All kinds of DIY interests are welcome: we can focus on foraging, permaculture, prepping, woodworking, or hovercraft making—or perhaps all of these at once! Through our shared stories, we will seek to understand more deeply how DIY functions in American life. Participants are welcome to bring small, portable DIY projects (e.g., canning, quilting, crafting, jewelry design, paper making, etc.) to the event. Register in person at the Reference Desk or by calling 503-992-3337.
