Special Book Discussion Wednesday, July 24 at 6:00 pm Don't Skip Out on Meby Willy Vlautin At 21, Horace Hopper is ready to leave the mountains of Nevada and the only stability he has ever known—herding sheep at the ranch of his guardian, Mr. Reese—to become a champion boxer and to fulfill the destiny laid out in his self-help books. At 72, Mr. Reese needs Horace to keep the ranch going but knows he cannot stand in the way of his surrogate son's dreams. On his own for the first time in Tucson, Horace finds a trainer and changes his name (no Paiute has ever been a famous fighter). As the fights get harder and the physical toll becomes greater, Horace's withering self-doubt threatens to consume him, just as Mr. Reese decides it's time to call him home. This is a deeply compassionate story made more poignant for its unadorned simplicity. Join us for book discussions as part of the Adult Summer Reading Experience! We will be discussing Willy Vlautin's books, Lean on Pete and Don't Skip Out on Me. Get your book copies from the library.

Book Club Selection for July The Feather Thief : Beauty, Obsession, and The Natural History Heist of The Century by Kirk W. JohnsonDocuments the astonishing 2009 theft of an invaluable collection of ornithological displays from the British Museum of Natural History by a talented American musician, tracing the author's years-long investigation to track down the culprit and understand his motives, which were possibly linked to an obsession with the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Book Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm. New members welcome!
