Book Discussion Group Our online book discussion group just finished talking about To The Stars Through Difficulties by Romalyn Tilghman. This Kansas based story brought an interesting discussion about the current state of local art institutes and about the history around Carnegie funded libraries in Kansas. This month we’ll be reading and discussing Orphan Train by Christine Baker Kline. The library has reserved several copies of the book for patrons to check out and read during the month of June. If you would like to join in the discussion, check out our group on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cplibrary.

Kansas Legends and Folktales We are happy to have Jim Hoy coming Monday, June 11th @ 5PM, to talk about the many myths and legends that are kept alive around Kansas. Most Kansans are familiar with the stories of grasshoppers so big that cowboys could ride them, or summers so hot that corn popped in the field. Kansas is a place of big skies and tall tales, but these exaggerated narratives help us understand the character of our state and its people. This presentation will explore some of the many legends and folktales from around the state, and what they say about the communities that keep these stories alive. This program is free and open to all patrons.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
by Mark Twain
The classic story of a boy who makes his own rules and the small Missouri town in Manga format! The clever schemes of its eponymous hero--from tricking his friends into completing his chores to sneaking into his own funeral--are the stuff of legend, and the cast of characters, including Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher, Aunt Polly, and the Widow Douglas, is one of the most recognizable in American literature. A tale of friendship, fun, and intrigue that celebrates the rural life Mark Twain knew as a boy growing up on the Mississippi River, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer mixes good-natured humor with thoughtful consideration of serious issues such as race, religion, and the strictures of adult life. Amusing and insightful for readers of all ages, it is one of the most enduring novels in American literature.

The Outsider
by Stephen King
An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation...An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. The case seems ironclad, especially when Anderson and the district attorney are able to add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. But Maitland has an alibi, and it turns out his story has incontrovertible evidence of its own. How can two opposing stories be true?
