Haters gonna hate.

Nowadays graphic novels can be found in bookstores, libraries, and online databases. We librarians have embraced this format wholeheartedly as we see more and more of these beauties winning major literary awards.

Unfortunately, I bet most of us know at least one teacher or parent who doesn't see the same value in graphic formats as its avid young fans (ever hear "It's not really reading"?).

You can’t please everyone, but when parents and teachers require students to read text-based books, you can help out graphic novel fans by directing them to text-based matches for popular graphic novels.

Stay strong!

Graphic novels rarely have time to collect dust because they are constantly in use. Whether your issue is a lack of support or thriving circulation, this flyer will steer kids to text-based books with similar genres, themes, and appeals. Place it in your graphic novel stacks, and watch your students scatter!

You can use NoveList to help you find more graphic novel/text-based matches. If you have a high-circulating graphic novel, search for that title, then use its subject headings, genres, or themes to find some text-based read-alikes (limit by audience for even better matches). Below are some example searches that use popular graphic novels elements, but will bring back text-based results:
  • Search by subject -- SU Girl heroes NOT GX Graphic novels AND RL 4
  • Search by genre -- GN Action NOT GX Graphic novels AND RL 4
  • Search by theme -- BX To the rescue! NOT GX Graphic novels AND RL 4
Drop us a line letting us know how you include graphic novels in your school community!
