It's the 130th birthday of the City of Tampa. Come celebrate with us during Archive Awareness Week at the Florida History and Genealogy Library. Join Rodney Kite-Powell, Curator of History at the Tampa Bay History Center, for a look at the role of the cigar industry in the development of modern Tampa. Learn about the Latin communities of Ybor City and West Tampa, the vibrant social clubs and culture they created, and the hundreds of factories that earned Tampa the name "Cigar City." In partnership with the City of Tampa and the Tampa History Center. Funded by the Friends of the John F. Germany Public Library.

The Losers Tampa

The Losers in Tampa was said to be the top rock n roll club in America by many of the top musicians. It had over a million patrons made up of whites, blacks, latinos, straights and gays. It never could hold all that wanted in, many nights drawing over 2000 people without bouncers. Florida Roots Navy Wings

Book about the WWII exploits of Lt. Cdr. Samuel A. Davis, USNR. When Davis was awarded the Navy Cross in the field, the young man had achieved his ambition to get out of the backwoods of Florida and be somebody. His crew was charged with air-sea rescue, based on Okinawa. On one mission they volunteered to go to the Inland Sea of Japan to rescue downed pilots. When the war ended, Davis found that the Florida he knew before was gone.
