People of all ages will be celebrating fairy tales and mythology this summer with this year's Summer Reading theme,Imagine Your Story. We will have fantastic online story time programs, book clubs, and reader-contributed book reviews. While Summer Reading programs at libraries, schools, and camps may look and feel a bit different this year, it is still very important to encourage children and teens to keep reading to avoid the "summer slide," or loss of reading comprehension and vocabulary skills over the summer.
Reading provides a relaxing escape for adults, too! Check out our amazing collection of beach-worthy eBooks, eAudiobooks, graphic novels and digital magazines through our Digital Library. Or, place a hold and use our new curbside pick-up service to check out more than 200,000 books and audiobooks available now from the regular library collection. Babies through Grade 5: Sign up online and log the minutes you read over the summer to receive reading certificates that can be redeemed for special prizes when the library buildings re-open. For 9 hours of reading, get fairy tale finger puppets. When you read for 15 hours, you'll receive a squishy toy!
Grades 6-12: Sign up online and log the minutes you read over the summer for the chance to win gift cards from vendors like Amazon, Chick-fil-A, GameStop, iTunes and more!
Adults: Log the number of books you read online for the chance to win an Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card at the end of the summer!
KIDS, TWEENS & TEENS
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to help pre-schoolers acquire early literacy skills, provide families with reading resources, and promote the future success of children in school. A yearly graduation program is held for children who complete the program. Learn more here.
Picture books come to life! Read-alongs on hoopla are accompanied by audio tracks synced with the book. Your child can enjoy these stories with you or on their own. To find them, enter "read along" in the hoopla search box. You may also want to check out the "Books for Bedtime" category to relax at the end of the day.
For easier searching for Kids content in hoopla, select the KIDS button at the top of the homepage or the "My hoopla" page on the app, and you're in Kids Mode. Select again to exit Kids Mode.
There are plenty of great new authors and titles available to engage middle-schoolers. Type "middle school" into the hoopla search bar to find fiction and non-fiction titles geared specifically for this age group, as well as those who teach and live with them.
Keep those thinking and sleuthing skills sharp with mystery-themed eBooks and audiobooks for middle-schoolers we've added to OverDrive. Listen to a mystery together for a fun family experience!
Check hoopla before you buy online! Teens will find current eBooks, graphic novels, and eAudiobooks in hoopla. There are hundreds of titles in teen fiction, required reading classics, college and career guidance, STEAM, relationships, biographies and more. Type "teen" or "young adult" into the search bar to narrow down your search.

SUNSHINE STATE YOUNG READER AWARDS
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a Florida-wide reading program to encourage Grade 3-8 students to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level to improve their reading fluency and to read independently for personal enjoyment. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal for young readers, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections and/or multicultural representation. You can find SSYRA on Overdrive here.
Explore hoopla for your next read! Have you tried searching by category? There is a "Browse" drop-down menu to the left of the search bar. Use that to select the format you want (eBook, audio, movies, etc.). Next, look for the "categories" link below to narrow your search. Try new categories like "hoopla's Top Titles of All Time," "Humor," and "Diverse Romance."
Are you missing your book club right now? Check out hoopla's Book Club Hub for titles that can be read independently or as a group, discussion questions, social media forums, and author interviews.
Looking for something new and exciting to read? Try a graphic novel! Hoopla has a great collection for all ages. Categories include Drama, European, Political, Religious, Humor, Literary, LGBT, Romance, Sports, Western and more. Find them all here.
Comic books may interest less-than-enthusiastic young readers. Type "new to comics" in hoopla's search box, then check the "children's titles only" box to find age-appropriate selections like these. Kids can read, listen to and watch titles on their favorite subjects.

Book Drops Are Open
Return your books, DVDs and other library materials to the drive-through book drops at the Downtown and Spanish River Libraries. All fines remain suspended until the library buildings reopen.
