The Last Kingdom
by Bernard Cornwell
They came from the sea like monsters! This historical epic is about how England nearly vanished due to the conquest of Viking Danes. The protagonist of this tale is Uthred, an English nobleman’s son, who is captured and raised by Danes when his father is killed in battle. We see Uthred become a warrior who must choose a side. His English blood makes him too English for the Danes, and his behavior and appearance are too Danish for the English. Which side will he join?

Romiette and Julio
by Sharon M. Draper
This was probably my favorite book in middle and high school. It is a spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet story, but it places the forbidden couple in a '90s urban city. Not only are family and friends against their relationship, but there is also the threat of a gang that does not want the two together.

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
by David Sedaris
This book is for people who enjoy dark comedies. It's a compilation of short stories that, for some, seem partially autobiographical. While others are clearly fiction, you still feel like the story may have possibly happened.
