Are you feeling the itch to get out and see the world, but trying to avoid unnecessary travel while the pandemic continues? Stretch your metaphorical legs and send your mind to far-off places and times with the books on this list! We'll also be recording readings of brief excerpts from these titles that you can dial in to listen to. Call (971) 245-7734 to hear the latest excerpt!

Aloha Community Library staff are working hard to bring virtual events to you via YouTube and Zoom!

The Aloha Community Library might be small, but we've got a lot going on! One of just three local libraries in Washington County that are run by non-profit associations, we first opened our doors nearly eight years ago in September 2012. We operated independently for several years before becoming the newest member library of the WCCLS cooperative in July 2016, and have continued to grow ever since!

"The first in a series conceived as the setting for an RPG played by the author - a trained archaeologist and anthropologist who poured his expertise into crafting a fully realized fantasy world - this book follows the Malazan Empire’s military campaign against rebelling city states. If you’re a fan of dense, complex, epic fantasy, then I can’t possibly recommend strongly enough that you start reading this series today." - Jared S., Aloha Community Library

"Most travel guides describe the highest rated and most popular attractions in a place. Not this one, which presents the odd, the unique, and the downright strange from across the globe! From the salty confines of Kenya’s Kitum Cave (carved by elephants!) to the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft’s “necropants” (creepy but reputed to magically attract great wealth!), this book and its plentiful color illustrations offer fascinating glimpses into the weird and the wonderful around the world." - Maggie H., Aloha Community Library
|
"A hard-boiled detective story set in an alternate history where, post WWII, the U.S. government granted asylum to millions of Jewish refugees in Sitka, Alaska. The city is rendered with meticulous specificity. The noir-style prose is dense with meaning yet vivid, snappy, and very fun." - John F., Aloha Community Library

Online (Zoom) Aloha's Crafternoon series is going remote! This monthly program for adults will alternate between guided projects using common craft supplies and household goods that you may have already, and relaxed coloring sessions. This month, we’re coloring! No registration is required, and you’re welcome to bring a beverage of your choice and join the conversation online or by phone, whether you’re participating in the coloring or not. No printer at home and need a coloring page? Give us a call (503-259-0185) or an email, and we’ll do our best to help!

Online (Zoom) Whether you are new or seasoned to backyard birding, this class will offer a variety of fun info-nuggets to help you enjoy your backyard birds more! You will learn who is who in the bird world, what one type of feeder design offers over another, how to get your best value when it comes to selecting foods to offer birds, and tips for inviting birds into your yard. Class will be taught live over Zoom by biologist and bird enthusiast Darlene Betat of Backyard Bird Shop, so she can answer any questions you might have.

The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks This free, interactive Google Arts & Culture documentary (with optional captions) lets you take 360-degree tours to explore some of the lesser-visited U.S. National Parks. Follow bats into a cave, fly over an active lava vent, abseil into a glacial crevasse, swim through a coral reef, and explore the pristine night sky. For a truly immersive experience, don’t forget to hit F11 to go full screen!
