"The public library is a center of public happiness first..." ~John Cotton Dana, 1896

When library doors closed in March due to COVID-19, staff created a daily newsletter reaching out to our staff, volunteers and community called Library Joy to ease isolation and bring a little joy amidst these troubling times. North Plains Library staff compiled "Library Joy" Reads to share with you!

Answer time
In the last issue, we gave you three pairs of WCCLS libraries and asked you to guess which pair was located the farthest away from one another, as the bird flies.

42 percent of trivia participants correctly guessed that the Forest Grove City Library and the North Plains Public Library are situated farther apart (7.56 miles) than the Tualatin Public Library and the main branch of the Beaverton City Library (7.24 miles) or the Hillsboro Public Library, Brookwood and the Cedar Mill Library (6.4 miles). Well done!

North Plains staff get into their work! Oh, Library Joy!
In 2001, a library seemed like an impossible dream in a city with about 1600 residents, but a handful of dedicated, forward thinking citizens moved ahead with the idea. The Friends group put together a collection of books for loan in a 590 square foot janitor's closet housed in the city's community center. The lending library operated with 100% volunteer labor.

Despite its size and limitations, area residents embraced the concept. In 2004, a local business owner donated supplies and labor to construct our beautiful library and Friends raised the $500,000 needed to furnish and equip it. The idea that started with a few residents has blossomed into a full-fledged center of learning, community and culture.

We believe you will find the story of our library impressive - but more importantly, it may sow the idea in readers' minds that they, too, can dream big!
