Question time
Most of the reading recommendations in this issue may be science fiction, but this week's trivia question is science fact!

Here are four galaxies (or groups of galaxies) that have names as well as other designations. Which was first observed the most recently?

What the Book?
Readers, you've outdone yourselves with your What the Book? submissions this week! It was tough, but we've narrowed them down to four runners-up and one first-place favorite.
Book cover with text removed. A model strikes an awkward pose for a photographer. Both wear outrageous vintage fashions.
In no particular order, our four runners up are:
  • Patchwork Diva
    submitted by Lily T.
  • My Mother Made Me Wear It
    submitted by Harriet O.
  • It's "Hip" to be square!
    submitted by Karen B.
  • The Making of "A Patchwork Orange"
    submitted by Marilyn S.
And our favorite title of all this week was ... *drumroll, please!* ...

Quarantine Quilting for Zoom Choirs
submitted by Kelly K.

Kelly will receive a $20 Powell's gift card and a WCCLS Reads canvas tote bag for her winning submission!

Don't miss reading the rest of the submissions! And click here to learn what the real title is and admire some of the other wacky styles from inside the book.

Thanks for playing What the Book? with us this summer!

Library of the week
Hillsboro Public Library
The front of the Brookwood library, a 2-storey building with large windows.
The Brookwood library opened in 2007 and expanded in 2013, to its current 77,000 sq ft size.

The front of the Shute Park branch, a glass-fronted building surrounded by trees.
The renovated Shute Park Library re-opened in March of 2014 as a neighborhood branch library and community gathering spot.

A green and blue van with "Library on the Loose" written on the side in large letters.
The Hillsboro Public Library is home to over 300,000 items that you can check out. Our extensive collection includes Blu-Rays and DVDs, audiobooks, cookware and bakeware, musical instruments, Arduino kits, microscopes, telescopes - and even books!

The Brookwood and Shute park libraries have been joined by a new branch: Hillsboro Public Library's Book-O-Mat, an automated book kiosk, is located downtown at the Civic Center, and stocked with bestsellers, audiobooks, and movies for checkout.

This kiosk is the first of its kind in Oregon, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

New and wonderful
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
"Humans are aliens among ourselves in a political sci-fi culture clash with a high-minded mystery at its heart. The plot is excellent, if a bit simple, but the bulk of the creativity is spent on the science fiction technology and culture." - Rob P., Hillsboro Public Library
Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix
"I'm not a dark horror reader, but this book caught my attention. What a fun reading experience it was! It's constructed to look like an IKEA catalog, so it's best read in print form. There are plot holes, and gimmicks. But that's just part of the charm." - Jennifer F., Hillsboro Public Library
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
"This is a great escapist YA fantasy read - magic, adventure, a quest to save the world, and a little romance. Plus a snarky sorcerer with a dark past (irresistible!), witty banter, and magical books with personalities. How could you say no to that?" - Elena G., Hillsboro Public Library
