National Library Week, April 9-15: "Libraries transform" The San Mateo Public Library will join libraries nationwide in celebrating the many ways libraries are transforming their communities every day. The following special activities have been planned-- Library Card Design Contest – Community members are encouraged to design new library cards. The contest will run from April 9 through May 31. Winners will be selected from three groupings—Children, Teens and Adults. The new library cards will be ready for distribution in September, which is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Passport to Your Library Adventure – April 1 through 15. Community members are encouraged to explore Peninsula Library System libraries to take part in activities and be eligible to win prizes. Pick up a passport log at any PLS library to get started and turn in your log by April 15th to be entered into a prize drawing.

Family Concert: Huckleberry Quartet The Huckleberry Quartet takes young audiences on a whirlwind tour of musical styles and cultural traditions that include classical, jazz, blues, and world music from many countries across the centuries. These four virtuosic string players entertain and engage audiences of all ages. Join us for this family concert on Saturday, April 1 at 3:00 pm in the Main Library's Oak Room. This event is cosponsored by Kohl Mansion.

Teen Spring Break Teens and tweens from 6th-12th grade, pick up your Teen Spring Break Booklet until April 14th at any San Mateo City Library. Complete 5 activities or reading tasks and receive a free book and a $5 gift card to Tpumps, Jamba Juice, or Cream. Join us for these fun activities! Spring Art: April 3 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Make a bottle cap ladybug magnet, create string art flowers, and much more! Refreshments provided. Registration required. Silent Library: April 8 at 2:00 pm. Can you hold it together while completing challenges guaranteed to make you laugh? If you're up for the challenge, join us for Silent Library where you'll complete against other teams to see who can complete tasks without making a sound. Registration required. Meditation workshop Join us on Saturday, April 22 from 11-12:30 pm for a meditation workshop. Stanford professor Dr. Manish Saggar will explore psychological and traditional views on the benefits of meditation, discuss how meditation enhances brain function, and will lead a meditation sitting. The event will be held in the Main Library's Oak Room. |

Author talk: Filoli Historic Estate and Gardens Julia Bly DeVere, author and Head Curator at Filoli, will discuss the history, architecture, and gardens of Filoli, one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century and a San Mateo County landmark. Join us for this talk on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm in the Main Library's Oak Room. DeVere will sign her new book, Filoli—Family Home, Historic Garden, Living Museum (copies will be available for purchase).

Scratch Coding Class for kids Have fun learning how to make games, tell stories, and create computer art with special effects and sound at our Scratch Coding Class on Saturday, April 29 from 1-2:30 pm (Main Library's Computer Lab). You can make your own game in Scratch even if you've never programmed before. This program is for 4th-8th graders. Registration is required.

Dave Eggers to speak at Author Gala, April 29 The San Mateo Public Library Foundation and its auxiliary, the Literary Society, will host the 6th annual Author Gala on April 29 at the San Mateo Marriott to raise funds for the Library. Reminder: 2-hr. limit in Main Library's garage Due to the increase in the number of library visitors since the grand opening (2006), the City will begin enforcing its 2-hour parking limit in the Main Library’s garage on May 1st. Parking at the Main Library will be reserved exclusively for library patrons and limited to two hours, Monday–Thursday from 8:00 am-6:00 pm, and Friday-Saturday from 8-5 pm. Please note that parking tickets will be issued to violators.

City Arts of San Mateo City Arts of San Mateo presents an exhibition of their High School Art Recognition Program featuring artwork from Aragon, Hillsdale, and San Mateo High Schools. The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Illusion/Reality.” Visual artwork will be on display at the library in the 1st floor hallway near the Oak Room and on the 3rd floor in the Teen Lounge until April 29.

Jane Austen Society, Hats The Northern California chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America presents a display titled, "The mode in hats and headdresses during the lifetime of Jane Austen + 16 years: 1775-1833." The display features caps, turbans and hats on heads with period-appropriate paper hairdos. The hats are on display in the Second Floor Display Case until April 29.
