Hearts of the Dulcimer: A Documentary Friday, February 6 @ 6:30 p.m. Sharp Park Library This is a documentary about the California mountain dulcimer boom in the 1970's and its lasting impact. Through interviews, archival footage, and live performances, this film gives a firsthand account of living life in the counterculture, following one's passion, and playing and building mountain dulcimers. Filmmakers Patricia Delich and Wayne Jiang will introduce the film and take questions after the screening. They will also demonstrate how to play a dulcimer.

Digital Film Workshop Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. @ Ingrid B Lacy School Learn the three aspects of filmmaking including pre- and post-production with Neil Corbin, filmmaker, of San Francisco State and Bay Area Video Coalition. For ages 12-19 years old. To sign up, call (650) 355-5196 ext. 229. We'll also let you know about Dig It, a library program where a teen can borrow an HD camera, and edit using an Imac with Imovie, Final Cut Pro and Garage Band software. Also, teens can enter a short film, by February 27, to the March 2015 San Mateo County Library Teen Film Festival to be eligible to win a grand prize. SMCL Teen Film Festival information packets are available at both Pacifica Libraries.

Make It Wednesday, February 11 @ 3:30 p.m. Sharp Park Library Projects in science, electronics and do-it-yourself crafts. For ages 8 and up/teens. Registration required; register once and you're able to attend the rest of the sessions as well (Mar. 11, Apr. 8 & May 13). Materials will be provided. Generously funded by the Pacifica Friends of the Library.

Lunar New Year Papercut Workshop Wednesday, February 18 @ 3:00 p.m. Sharp Park Library Make your own papercut to celebrate the Year of the Sheep. Have you ever wondered how artists transform paper with just scissors? Long a folk tradition in China, centuries-old skills are still used today to cut paper to decorate homes in celebration of Lunar New Year. You'll get to handle some real examples before making your own paper cut of this year's zodiac animal. Space is limited, so register today. For ages 5-99. This program is generously funded by the Pacifica Friends of the Library.

Paws for Tales Monday, February 23 @ 4:00 p.m. Sanchez Library Children can improve their reading skills by reading to a trained therapy dog. Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers are from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA’s Paws for Tales program. Please note that the Humane Society requires a signed release form each time a child comes to read. Please make sure a parent or guardian accompanies the child. Ages 5-12

Lawyers in the Library Tuesday, February 24 @ 6:00 p.m. Sharp Park Library The fourth Tuesday of each month the Sharp Park Library, in partnership with the San Mateo County Bar Association, holds free legal clinics. Participants have a twenty-minute free consultation with an attorney. This month’s topics are adoptions, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support/alimony, divorce, guardianship, paternity, separations, domestic violence, restraining orders. Registration required.

Prom Dress Drive February 1st to the 28th Donate your gently used formal dress and make a dream come true for a girl in need. All dresses will be distributed by the San Mateo County Human Services Agency at the 2015 Rise Above Empowerment Conference for teen girls. Bring your donations to any of the following library branches between February 1st and the 28th: Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica Sharp Park, Portola Valley, San Carlos, or Woodside.

Calling All Poets: Poetry is Love February 1st to the 28th Submit up to 20 lines of the "Poetry is...Love" campaign and it will be posted on the San Mateo County Poet Laureate website during the month of February. You may submit more than one poem. You can email your poem to mdragun@smcgov.org; be sure to include your name, address, email and phone number, along with your age, within the body of the email. In the subject line, write “Poetry IS Love.” If you are a student, let us know which school you attend and what grade you are in.
