Reading by Spirit of the Written Word writers: Saturday January 23, 2-4 PM snow date for reception: Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 5:30-7:30 PM snow date for reading: January 27, 5:30-7:30 PM One in Eight: The Torso Project, a compelling exhibit of embellished plaster cast torsos made by area breast cancer survivors, female family members and friends, will be on display in January. On Saturday, January 23, from 2 – 4 pm, members of Spirit of the Written Word writing groups for people affected by cancer from Greenfield and at Cancer Connection will read from their writings in the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library & Museum next to the gallery. Women affected by breast cancer from Western Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire created their torsos during free, grant-supported workshops over the past seven years. Cancer Connection, a Northampton-based nonprofit cancer support center serving the Pioneer Valley, underwrites the exhibit and hosts torso-making workshops with funding support from the Rays of Hope Foundation. Both completed three-dimensional pieces and photos of torsos from past workshops will be displayed at the gallery, each accompanied by a personal statement describing the woman’s breast cancer journey and experience of making her torso. An interactive area at the exhibit invites community response and healing. The title of the show, 1 in 8: The Torso Project, brings attention to the fact that one in eight women, over the course of her lifetime, will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Its creator, Pam Roberts, a 22-year breast cancer survivor, leads the project. Roberts is an artist, writer, certified yoga instructor and energy healer who leads this and other programs for people affected by cancer and loss throughout New England.
