"She was tired of being told how it was by this generation, who’d botched things so badly. They’d sold their children a pack of lies…She knew now that the world was a long way from fair. She knew the monsters were real." ~ from Libba Bray's The Diviners

Knockout Games by G. NeriFiction. "One hit or quit." That's the rule of the TKOs boxing club, led by Kalvin, the "Knockout King" -- who's also 16-year-old Erica's new boyfriend. At first, Erica is thrilled by the adrenaline rush of filming the TKOs as they challenge each other to brutally punch out random strangers. But their actions soon explode out of control, even as Kalvin's control over Erica grows stronger. Loaded with ripped-from-the-headlines drama, Knockout Games is harsh, intense, and thought-provoking. For a more hopeful but equally gripping story of urban teens trying to untangle loyalty and violence, check out Jason Reynolds' When I Was the Greatest.

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie PerkinsContemporary Romance. Red-haired Isla, a senior at the School of America in Paris, has been in love with quiet, rebellious artist Josh since forever. Still, she's surprised when a genuine romance begins to blossom between them. Their relationship challenges not only Isla's connection with her high-functioning autistic best friend Kurt, but also her self-confidence. Why should Josh, who has talent and a post-graduation plan, be into someone like Isla, who isn't sure what she wants from the future? Set against a backdrop of world-famous cities, this sweet, steamy love story will charm fans of Sarah Dessen who, like Stephanie Perkins, includes cameo appearances by characters from her previous books.

100 Sideways Miles by Andrew SmithFiction. Finn is used to people thinking he's a freak. First, his mother was killed in a bizarre accident involving a dead horse. Then his dad turned Finn into a character in his novel, which became a cult favorite. At least Finn's best friend Cade (a foul-mouthed, sex-crazed prankster) treats him like a real person. So does Julia, the fascinating new girl who's able to see beyond Finn's epileptic seizures and unusual habit of measuring time in miles. Even though 100 Sideways Miles features ghosts, a flash flood, and a wild road trip, it's the complex and satisfyingly weird characters that really make it a memorable read. If you're an outside-the-box reader looking for more edgy, absurd stories, try Libba Bray's Going Bovine.

The Infinite Sea by Rick YanceyScience Fiction. For fans of The 5th Wave, the wait for a sequel is finally over! Sixteen-year-old Cassie and her friends just barely managed to escape the alien Others' attempts to exterminate the human race. Now they have to decide if it's worth risking their lives again to search for other survivors -- including the dangerous Evan, for whom Cassie still harbors conflicted feelings. Multiple perspectives offer deeper insight into the characters as they struggle to trust each other in an atmosphere of intense post-apocalyptic paranoia. If you're new to the addictive action and startling twists of this popular series, now is the time to grab the 1st book and start reading -- there's already a movie in the works.

Fiendish by Brenna YovanoffParanormal Fantasy. Ten years ago, fear and hatred drove the townspeople of New South Bend to attack their magical "craft" neighbors in a fiery purge known as "the reckoning." Young Clementine survived, but only because someone put her in a magical trance and hid her in a cellar with her eyes sewn shut. Now, newly awoken by Fisher (a boy with craft heritage), Clementine must uncover the secrets of her past before the threatening supernatural forces that woke with her overwhelm the town. Intricate, unsettling, and written with "seemingly effortless originality" (Booklist), this modern Gothic tale is a deliciously haunting choice for fans of dark paranormal romance.

Ashes by Ilsa J. BickHorror/SF. Seventeen-year-old Alex is on a solo camping trip in the woods (and playing hooky from her seemingly pointless chemo treatments) when a series of electromagnetic pulses renders all technology useless, kills most of Earth's population, and turns many of those left alive into ravenous, bloodthirsty cannibals. But Alex isn't entirely alone; she teams up with an eight-year-old girl and a young soldier on leave who, like her, weren't transformed by the pulses, and the three of them fight together for survival. Terrifying and exhilarating, this gruesome trilogy opener is one that fans of apocalyptic fiction will devour.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly BlackParanormal Fiction. After a night of partying, 17-year-old Tana wakes up to find all of her friends slaughtered by vampires…all except for her newly vamped ex-boyfriend, Aidan, and Gavriel, a mysterious vampire who saves her from Aidan's infectious bite. Tana is determined to travel with Aidan and Gavriel to Coldtown, a restricted zone for vampires and their human groupies. But even if she survives the trip, is she strong enough to resist Coldtown's deadly, seductive charms? With "rapid-fire dialogue, lavish details, and a wildly imagined world" (Booklist) in which monsters can be reality TV stars, Holly Black casts a uniquely chilling spell. If you're fascinated by the idea of vampirism as a disease, you might also like Scott Westerfeld's Peeps.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare BlakeHorror. Since his father's death three years ago, 17-year-old Cas Lowood has carried on his dad's ghost-hunting work, traveling from town to town with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. But then Cas meets his match: Anna Korlov, possibly the most vicious ghost he's encountered...and she lets him live. There's a powerful attraction between Cas and Anna, and Cas wants to find a way to stop Anna's reign of terror without killing her -- but what if he can't? This suspenseful, gory blend of adventure and romance is shot through with humor and should grab fans of the TV show Supernatural. If you'd prefer a story told from a vengeful spirit's perspective, pick up The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco.

The Diviners by Libba BrayHistorical Fantasy. After her wild behavior lands her in hot water, privileged young Evie O'Neill is sent to live with her eccentric uncle in New York City -- a "punishment" that delights Evie, who can't wait to mix with Ziegfield girls and sneak into some big-city speakeasies (it's the Roaring Twenties). But when her Uncle Will, curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult, is called on to help solve a rash of otherworldly murders, Evie is drawn in to the investigation because of a special ability she's tried to keep secret. Full of vivid period detail and intriguing characters and laced with shiver-inducing menace, this sprawling 1st in a series will thrill readers of supernatural mysteries and historical novels alike.

The Waking Dark by Robin WassermanHorror. On "the day of killing," five people in tiny Oleander, Kansas, went on a sudden murder spree, and no one -- not even Cass, who killed the child she was babysitting -- can explain why. The sinister truth behind this shocking event doesn't start to emerge until a year later, when a tornado rips through town, plunging the adults into depraved insanity and forcing a group of teens (including Cass) to fight for escape. Similar in style to Stephen King's books, The Waking Dark will appeal to unflinching older teens who don't mind intense, graphic violence. For another horror story that really goes there -- and then keeps going -- check out Daniel Kraus' Scowler.
