You're invited to enjoy a free series of programs to help you discover your family's history. All programs and events are free and open to the public. SAVE THE DATE Genealogy After Dark at the Clayton Library Friday, October 16, 2015 12 PM - 11 PM Celebrate your family history with Clayton Library all day and into the night! The Library will close at 5PM and re-open at 6 PM. Reservations are required, please call 832-393-2600. Adults/Teens. In addition to extended research hours, throughout the day computer webinars will be broadcast from libraries across Texas and projected on the Clayton Library Carriage House screen. The last presentation of the evening will be: Using Archives to Grow Genealogy Skills from 9:40 PM to 10:30 PM with Liz Sargent and it will be LIVE at Clayton.

Author Discussion & Music Preview Author Ann Weisgarber reads from and discusses her book, "The Promise" About the Book In 1900, young pianist Catherine Wainwright flees the fashionable town of Dayton, Ohio in the wake of a terrible scandal. Heartbroken and facing destitution, she finds herself striking up correspondence with a childhood admirer, the recently widowed Oscar Williams. In desperation she agrees to marry him. But when Catherine travels to Oscar's farm on Galveston Island, Texas—a thousand miles from home—she finds she is little prepared for the life that awaits her. About the Author Ann Weisgarber is the author of "The Promise," which was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, and "The Personal History of Rachel DuPree." She is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and the Friends of the Sugar Land Library in Fort Bend County. Born and raised in Ohio, Ann splits her time between Sugar Land, Texas, and Galveston, Texas.

EXHIBIT: Independence Heights: A Window to the Past Now through October 17, 2015 In 1908, black families began to move into an area northeast of Houston known as Independence Heights. By 1915, it contained over 600 people and its residents voted to become an incorporated city in Texas. In fact, the new City of Independence Heights was the first African American city in the state of Texas, according to accounts in the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Post. The exhibition, "Independence Heights: A Window to the Past," celebrates the city’s centennial. PROGRAM PRESENTATIONS DJ Culture in Houston Saturday, October 17, 2015 | 6 PM Jason Woods is a deejay and documentarian from Houston, TX. An accomplished photographer of over fifteen years, Woods began his study of photography at Jack Yates High School. He continued his study and progression as an artist at Sam Houston State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Photography. Also known as Flash Gordon Parks, Woods is an accomplished deejay in the city of Houston. In December 2008, Woods began a series of listening parties entitled, “Straight No Chaser”, to highlight local and world renowned artists while providing a refreshing entertainment alternative to Houstonians. Enjoy a special viewing of "This Thing We Do: Houston DJ Culture Revealed." PLEASE NOTE: This is an evening event and seating is limited. To RSVP, please call832-393-1440. Houston and the Blues Saturday, October 24, 2015 | 2 PM Art Dietz has been collecting and researching Houston music for over 25 years and is a frequent lecturer at Lone Star College’s Academy for Lifelong Learning. Dietz sits on the Advisory Board of the Houston Blues Museum (HBM) and produced the HBM-sponsored Duke-Peacock Series at Discovery Green.
