Reel RemakesFebruary 2018 Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh): I detect criminals. I do not protect them. --Murder on the Orient Express (2017) Making movies is an expensive proposition. With budgets running into the tens of millions of dollars to pay for cast and crew, production costs and marketing campaigns, any script that gets green-lighted represents a risk. Hollywood studios often hedge their bets by taking a great classic story or older audience favorite, giving it a quick update and then putting a remake in motion. Movie executives are looking for an easy cinematic home run: audience familiarity with the story, the security of a tried-and-true concept and most importantly, the reliability of hitting that financial gold mine once again. While this formula can dampen the climate for creative spirit and original ideas, in today's Hollywood, with 122 rebooted films made between 2003-2012, it's clear that remakes are here to stay.
