"The Blade Itself" by Joe Abercrombie
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught up in one feud too many, he’s on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian, leaving nothing behind but some bad songs, a few dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules. Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a jar. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendships. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government… if he can stay alive long enough to follow it. Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood. Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is fantasy with a real cutting edge.

Read Aloud Book Club (95th)
Thursday, November 2, 10:00 am

Reading aloud is a long-standing social tradition. Historically, families often read together as a form of entertainment, and factory workers had books read to them as a way to relieve the tedium. Naperville Public Library is reaching out in that tradition with its Read Aloud Book Club for adults who wish to enjoy and explore the written word in this historical format. The book club is open to all adult readers, especially those who are learning English. Short stories will be read at a pace determined by the group.

"The Girls" by Emma Cline
During the summer of 1969, 14-year-old Evie Boyd becomes fascinated with a group of girls she sees in a Petaluma, CA park. The girls all seem to typify the joyous freedom of the counterculture. Lonely Evie starts to pine to join such a group. Now middle-aged, Evie looks back on how her naiveté and isolation drew her into the path of the charismatic Russell Hadrick and his "family". After years to think about what happened, Evie has a greater understanding of what the events of that summer presaged. Obviously inspired by the Mason family, debut author Cline goes into new directions exploring the saga from the point of view of the girls. This coming-of-age story explores the darker side craving a sense of belonging as well as the violent consequences of the choices we make.
