Events celebrating American independence provide us with inspiration for delving into the backgrounds of our 18th century ancestors. For example, visitors to Chicago can feel immersed in revolutionary history at Hamilton: The Exhibition, which is at Northerly Island through the beginning of September. "Hamilton: The Exhibition takes visitors deeper into Alexander Hamilton’s life as it chronicles the American Revolution and the creation of the United States of America." The exhibit presents factual details through displays of original documents, three-dimensional timelines, and interactive exhibits. During my visit, I noted descriptions of the struggles of the new nation to pay veterans after the revolutionary war. The ancestors we find in pension files may have participated in the riots that occurred when pensions were not forthcoming, especially in the north where debts were greater. Pension files can be found in three NPL Online Resources: HeritageQuest, Fold3, and Ancestry Library Edition. The training materials for using these resources have been updated and can be found here. These materials include instructional PDFs, as well as recorded and upcoming interactive webinars.NPL's Fold3 and HeritageQuest resources can be accessed from home, and Fold3 is identical to a paid Fold3 subscription. Create an account to save your searches and to create memorial pages for veterans. The library's Online Resource Kanopy has 15 episodes of instructional videos in its online presentation Discovering Your Roots: An Introduction to Genealogy. Florida State Genealogical Society is hosting a webinar Anatomy of a Civil War Pension File by Julie Potter Miller, CG, CGL, FNGS, on Thursday, July 18th. Register here.

Ancestors: Who We Are and Where We Come Fromby David Hertzel

Naperville: A Brief Historyby Bryan J OggThe settlers who followed the Napers to the DuPage River had to endure the hardships of felling trees and plowing prairies to make a place to call home. The campuses of the Research and Technology corridor might seem pretty far removed from the travails of those early years, but both are part of the same determined community. That shared tradition holds surprises even for lifelong residents of Naperville, such as the location of the Stenger Brewery or the legacy of Peter Kroehler, furniture tycoon, mayor and philanthropist. Bryan Ogg takes stock of the unique people and memorable events that shaped Naperville from its humble founding through its current thriving state.
