Listed here are times when a volunteer from the Fox Valley Genealogical Society will be available in the adult services department to help any interested individuals who wish to obtain assistance either to get started on a genealogy project or to complete difficult genealogical research challenges. Thursday July 27 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nichols Program Room This class, presenting first steps for starting a Family Tree, is offered as part of the library's Summer Reading Program. Individuals that attend both sessions will receive a code for one prize level in the reading program. Space is limited, and it is first come, first served. This two-part beginners' series will introduce best practices to build a solid foundation for a family tree. The first class will introduce genealogy terms, include appropriate methods for collecting information at home and interviewing relatives, and standards for recording genealogical data. The second class will demonstrate basic search techniques, introduce the genealogical proof standard, and indicate where to look for free and affordable genealogical resources.

Military Genealogy Saturday, August 19, 10 a.m. Nichols Library Community Room Tina Beaird, owner of Tamarack Genealogy and the Genealogy & Local History librarian of the Plainfield Public Library, will explain the significance behind using original records for tracing one’s ancestor's military service. Records from the American Revolution to WWII will be discussed as well as sources for modern records. Learn what types of documents are available within federal, state and local archives.
