Listed here are times when a volunteer from the Fox Valley Genealogical Society will be available in the adult services department to help any interested individuals who wish to obtain assistance either to get started on a genealogy project or to complete difficult genealogical research challenges. Learn More about the Vietnam War on Fold3 On September 17, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s highly anticipated 10-part documentary The Vietnam War will begin airing. In the meantime, brush up on your knowledge of the conflict on Fold3 with the more than 21 million records in the Vietnam War Collection. Fold3 is available to anyone at all 3 Naperville Library branches, as well as remotely for Naperville Library cardholders.

Ancestry Library Edition ComparisonWondering what the difference is between Ancestry Library Edition and the subscription edition at Ancestry.com? Both provide more than 3,000 databases and census records with more than 1 billion names. Ancestry Library Edition does not allow uploads of photos and documents to personal family trees. Both editions provide access to documents and images from public family trees, including scans of obituaries (images are found within each tree's 'Gallery' tab). Family and Local History Collection books, the Obituary Collection, and Freedman's Bank Records are also unavailable in Ancestry Library Edition. Freedman's Bank Records are available in the Heritage Quest database, which is available remotely for Naperville Library cardholders. Click here to see all the Genealogy & Local History databases.

Thursday, September 14, 7:30 p.m. Naperville Municipal Center Lower Level Presenter: Jennifer Holik, 'The In-depth Genealogist', Owner of The World War II Research and Writing Center This is a trip through time to explore the service history of several men and women. This program, includes a brief recap on starting research and obtaining the Official Military Personnel File (OMPF), Air Force Accident Reports, Missing Air Crew Reports, Navy/Marine Corps Mission Reports, and Casualty and Prisoner of War (POW) records. The presentation will provide tips on weaving military, genealogical, and historical records together as well as using museums for research.

Genealogy: A Legacy of Love (NIC) Saturday, September 16, 10:00 am Nichols Library Community Room Even for the most diligent, collections of photos, film, video and family stories are not all digitized, neatly organized and accessible for those who come after. Wanda Schlafly, owner of Sunshine Video Productions, will talk about why leaving a legacy of love is important as well as providing some tips, tricks and practical considerations for using technology to help with this. Schlafly will explain digitizing and restoring photos, capturing and editing stories, as well as offer options for keeping and sharing these digital files to keep them from becoming obsolete. Information will also be provided regarding the digitizing hardware and software available at Naperville Public Libraries. Resources include scanners that can digitize stacks of print photos in minutes, convenient slide and film converters, video editing software, audio converters, video editing tutorials, photo restoration tutorials, and photo retouching software.

Guest speaker Patricia Lee Hobbs is a Certified Genealogist with a BA in Biology. She works as a professional genealogist as well as in the Local History and Genealogy Department at the Springfield-Greene County Library in Missouri. Hobbs instructs on the use and analysis of DNA testing and how it complements traditional genealogical research in original records. She has presented numerous workshops locally and nationally. She also teaches at the week-long Practical Genetic Genealogy course at the Genealogical Research Institute at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She will be teaching at a DNA course presented by the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Athens, Georgia. Genealogy: Field Trip to the Naperville Family History Center Saturday, October 21, 10:00 a.m. Family History Center, 1320 Ridgeland Ave. Naperville’s Family History Center offers an abundance of resources for genealogy enthusiasts. Staff from the resource center will introduce resources including: newspaper archives, Alexander Street Press, Find My Past Institution Edition, World Vital Records, Historic Map Works, MyHeritage Library Edition, Puzzilla.org and trials of family tree-building software. The center has 8 computers. Bring a laptop to ensure access to the online content. Meet at the center located in the church just north of the intersection of Ogden Ave. and Naper Boulevard, immediately north of the McDonald's.

Genealogy: Polish Research Saturday, November 18, 10 a.m. Nichols Community Room Jason Kruski, author of “A Guide to Chicago and Midwestern Polish-American Genealogy,” will be returning to present tools particular to researching Polish-American ancestry in the United States and ancestral villages in Poland. Kruski will discuss a wide variety of records including vital, church and immigration records available on the internet from the USA and Poland.
