It's Parade Time! Wednesday, July 4, 9:30 am All Ages Join PHPL staff and friends as we walk in the Prospect Heights Fourth of July Parade. Register at the Library to receive a Summer Reading t-shirt to wear on the day of the parade. Meet everyone at 9:30 am in the St. Alphonsus parking lot, The parade kicks off at 10:30 am.

Mindful Vagabond: Vagabonding for Kids! Wednesday, July 18, 3:00 - 4:00 pm Grades K-6 Join former primary educator Brian Michalski on his 22-month, 20-country solo backpacking journey, working and volunteering his way through Australia, Southeast Asia, India, Cuba and more in this highly interactive workshop. Discuss exploring new places, eating exotic foods (like spiders!), learning about unique cultural traditions, helping others and stepping outside our comfort zones. Then, vagabonds-to-be get passports as they travel through multiple stations which challenge them to listen, investigate, write, and illustrate.

Scales and Tales Traveling Zoo Wednesday, July 25, 4:00 - 5:00 pm All Ages The zoo is coming to the Library! Beth Wagner and her Scales & Tales Traveling Zoo have been providing Chicagoland area residents with professional, insightful and just plain fun animal shows for over 20 years. Always a hit with kids and parents alike, Beth and her animal crew make even the most timid person comfortable enough to encounter her menagerie. We hope you can join us for this memorable event.

Kid Firestopper Thursday, July 12, 3:00 - 4:00 pm Grades K-3 The American Red Cross and AmeriCorps Illinois will be here to teach kids about fire prevention and preparedness.

Home Alone Thursday, July 19, 3:00 - 4:00 pm Grades 4-6 The American Red Cross and AmeriCorps Illinois will teach basic knowledge on how to deal with strangers, what to do if there is an emergency, how to call 911, as well as reinforcement of rules put in place by caregivers.

Scrubby Bear Thursday, July 26, 3:00 - 4:00 pm Grades K-2 Through the use of games and stories, children learn the importance of hand washing, proper ways of covering their mouth when they sneeze and cough, and other ways to prevent the spread of germs. The American Red Cross and AmeriCorps Illinois will show us how.

Gene Myers' Cartooning Workshop Monday, July 9, 4:00 - 5:00 pm Grades 2-8 Cartoonist Gene Myers will present a workshop with step by step instructions on how to draw cartoons.

Tie Dye Workshop Wednesday, July 11, 2:00 - 3:00 pm OR 3:00 - 4:00 pm Grades K-8 Come dressed for a mess and bring your own shirt to make your tie dye creation. Have fun and then leave the clean-up to us. Register for one session only.

The Margin Project Have you ever wanted to talk back to a book? Ask the author or the main character what they were thinking? Or just wanted to be able to sit down and talk about the book you are reading with someone else who’s also read it? The Margin Project is your opportunity. Margin Project books are a special collection of titles in Youth Services that are intended to be interactive–readers are allowed to write in the margin (query, annotate, comment, or even doodle) and react to what previous readers have written. The Margin Project is like a book club crossed with social media or pen pals crossed with a book exchange. Learn more in the Youth Services Department, or contact Beth Klein, bklein@phpl.info.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a Library program that encourages all families and caregivers to read at least 1000 books with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them with the skills they need for Kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success. Register in the Youth Services Department and earn prizes along the way!

Read Down Your Fines Grades K-8 Do you have overdue fines on your library card? Now you can read those fines away. Prospect Heights Public Library wants to promote reading. The Read Down Your Fines program is intended to help children reduce their outstanding fines so they can continue to use their library card without interruption. The program encourages and promotes reading among our young people. There are no restrictions on what you can read. Patrons in Kindergarten through Grade 8 can participate in this program. Young adults may also read to or with younger children and both of you can get credit for the time. Stop by the Youth Services desk to find out more.

100 Books Before High School Grades 5-8 100 Books Before High School is a Library program that inspires reading. Participants receive a reading reward after every 20 books and a free book after 100. Hurry into the Library today to register in the Youth Services Department.

Book Bag Teachers and Homeschooling Parents can call Youth Services to request a Book Bag of materials on the subjects you are studying. Please call Youth Services one week in advance of needing the materials, tell us your topic/s and we’ll put together a bag of books and audio-visual materials.

Goodreads The Youth Services Department has a Goodreads group! Click the Goodreads button on our homepage, www.phpl.info, to learn what staff members are reading, and discuss other great children's books.
