Land of Silence by Tessa AfsharBiblical Fiction. Elianna's troubles begin with the bee, the one that stings and kills her young brother while he is in her care. Guilt-ridden, she pours herself into work at her family's textile business and breaks her betrothal to her beloved. Another tragedy on top of a chronic illness further her suffering -- but she eventually hears of a holy man named Jesus and touches the hem of his garment in the hope of finding peace and healing. Inspired by the New Testament story found in Luke 8:40-56, Mark 5:21-43, Matthew 9:18-26, Land of Silence is an uplifting, wonderfully imagined novel that makes first-century Jerusalem come to life.

Murder Comes By Mail by A.H. GabhartMystery. On his day off, Hidden Springs, Kentucky, Deputy Sheriff Michael Keane is driving a rickety bus full of church ladies to the city to see a play. On their way, they spot a suicidal man on the edge of a bridge. Michael talks him down him while an audience that includes the local news reporter watches, but the would-be jumper claims that Michael will regret his actions. When taunting letters and photos of murder victims start arriving at the sheriff's office, Michael is inclined to agree, suspecting that the man he saved is a serial killer. Quirky characters combined with a charming small-town setting make this well-plotted mystery, the 2nd in a series, a good bet for Vannetta Chapman's fans.

Anchor in the Storm: A Novel by Sarah SundinHistorical Romance. Tenacious pharmacist Lillian Avery, who lost part of a leg when she was five, finally has a job, though it means leaving her parents in Ohio and working in Boston. At least she'll be near her brothers at the Boston Naval Yard, when they aren't out looking for U-boats and such. When suspicious prescriptions come to her attention, Lillian finds herself working with one of her brother's charming friends to catch the culprits -- and love may blossom, too. For a look at England's home front, pick up Tracy Groot's excellent Maggie Bright.
