Listen to the Sound of Fall

Feel the sound

How does sound get to our ears?  In invisible waves through the air.  Here are a couple of  experiments that you can demonstrate to children on the concept of sound waves.

Create Danglers
To make a dangler, tie any of the following objects to the the middle of a four- feet length of  string cotton works best.

What you need:

  • metal spoon
  • socket wrench
  • potato masher
  • metal ladle
  • beaters

Have children choose a dangler,  next, have them wrap one end of the string around each index finger and then place a finger in each of their ears.  Have them gently hit the item against a table and listen for a sound.   Have each child try all of the danglers to see if each item makes a different pitched sound.

Amplify the Sound

What you will need:

  • A paper clip
  • string (cotton)
  • plastic cup
  • wet paper towels
Punch a hole in drinking cup with paper clip.  Thread string through the hole until there is enough string left to tie string onto paper clip so that paper clip is lying flat and string cannot go through.   Rub wet paper towel down the string and hear the sound.

Need a nursery rhyme:
Aiken Drum
Modern versions of the lyrics include:
There was a man lived in the moon,
lived in the moon, lived in the moon,
There was a man lived in the moon,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

''Chorus''
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle,
And he played upon a ladle,
and his name was Aiken Drum.
