The McHenry Library has hundreds of books and DVDs to supplement your classroom and school resources! Checking out materials via our Classroom Checkout Program allows you to have materials for extended times and avoid overdue fines. Contact us with the topic, grade, number of students, as well as your contact info, and YS staff will gather appropriate resources and have them available for pick-up at the library. Please allow 48 hours for our librarians to put together your resources. For pickups between Saturday-Monday, requests must be placed by the end of the day (9 PM) on the prior Thursday. Teachers are responsible for lost or damaged items.
Teachers may also check out materials for their own use by registering their Illinois library card at the Checkout Desk, even if the card is issued by another library. If interested, call us at 815-385-0036, email us, or contact us through our online form, and select "Books for Classrooms" from the drop-down subject menu.

Science Online is a great science database with a plethora of essays, videos, diagrams, definitions, biographies, and experiments. It is extremely browsable, making it a great resource for any science assignment or project. On the main page, explore such topics as "eLearning Modules," "Featured Videos and Animations," "Interactive Experiments," "Featured Diagrams," and "Featured People." "Interactive Experiments" is one of the highlights of this database, providing browser-based experiments that don't require any materials or setup. Recent discoveries are highlighted in "Science in the News" in a sidebar on the right. These articles are well researched and even include discussion questions to use with your classroom. Don't forget to check out the "Curriculum Tools" on the top, which provides a number of excellent student and educator resources, from citing sources, to evaluating online sources, to writing a research paper! We highly recommend this database for all your science needs! Check out Science Online here:

This is one of my favorite board books. In this story we meet Pico, a hedgehog, and his friends the moles. Now that is summer, Pico wants to start growing carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, squash, and more to get his orchard ready for summer!
This book shows kids the process of gardening, from planting seeds, watering the vegetables, watching them grow, and finally collecting all the veggies once they are ripe. I also love that it has flaps that open up and tabs that you or your child can move. This is a really cute interactive story! The illustrations are charming, and your child will build fine motor skills while reading this book with you. I also think it is great STEM option, especially for younger children.

One of the four books in the Superpower Science series, The Superhuman Body is a great nonfiction book written in a comic book format. In this book, the reader is introduced to different body systems. Then they are introduced to four different superheroes and the hypothetical science behind their superpowers - with a twist! The book focuses on the negative aspects of superpowers and emphasizes that humankind is already pretty amazing. Not only is this a great STEAM read, it is clever and humorous and features a diverse cast of characters. The book has a glossary and list of suggested websites and books for those who want to learn more. Some topics may require a preliminary knowledge of the subject to understand, but they can also inspire students to learn more. The Superpower Science series is one you'll want to check out!
