In the near future, a virulent strain of flu has devastated much of the world; holed up at a small Colorado airfield, Hig has only his much-loved dog, Jasper, and a well-armed survivalist named Bangley for company. Together, they defend their territory from dangerous invaders, but Hig longs for more, and spends much of his time out walking or flying his Cessna in search of the faint voice he heard over his radio. Author and outdoorsman Peter Heller is known for reflective and pulse-pounding nonfiction, but it's the evocative descriptions of nature -- through Hig's hunting, fishing, and flying -- that drive his emotionally intense first novel, which is "perhaps the world's most poetic survival guide" (Publishers Weekly).
15 Seconds - by Andrew Gross
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

ISBN-13: 9780061655975

Thriller. Lost on his way to a convention in Jacksonville, Florida, plastic surgeon and Doctors Without Borders volunteer Harry Steadman runs a light and gets pulled over by a cop. Within minutes, cop and doctor are arguing when an old blue sedan drives by and shoots the cop in the head. Panicked, Harry takes off, but he's soon being pursued by the police, who within the hour step up their search when a friend of Harry's is killed as well. It soon becomes clear that someone is out to destroy Harry (but why?), and allies are few and far between. A "fast, fun read with crisp dialogue and a tight plot" (Kirkus Reviews), 15 Seconds will have you reading straight through the night.

The award-winning author of Merle's Door draws on cutting-edge research to present a narrative guide to canine care that covers such controversial topics as the comparative health of purebred and mixed-breed dogs, the benefits and consequences of common health-care practices and the ways to identify best pet foods.
Visit Sunny Chernobyl: And Other Adventures in the World's Most Polluted Places - by Andrew Blackwell
Publisher: Rodale
Check Library Catalog Pub Date: 05/22/2012
ISBN-13: 9781605294452
ISBN-10: 1605294454
Chances are that the places author and filmmaker Andrew Blackwell visits in this book aren't on your travel bucket list. Let's see...Chernobyl? India's most fetid river? The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Linfen, China, which has been called the most polluted city in the world? Okay, even if you aren't interested in seeing things like oil sand in northern Alberta, Canada or visiting Port Arthur, Texas, aka Refineryville, you might be interested in checking out the Amazon rainforest...but, then again, maybe not the area Blackwell visits. After all, he purposefully picked out the "world's most degraded, despoiled, and ruined environments." While this book could be a big downer, Balckwell writes with charm and dry wit, giving readers an "entertaining, appealing, and thoughtful travelogue" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
