Library News
Celebrate Black History Month in February
 
This year's theme for Black History Month is the black family and its representation, identity, and diversity. Join us as we celebrate and learn about black history through the various programs being offered this month. Please visit the website for more information on how to register for upcoming events. 
Library Programs
In-person programs at all branches are limited until further notice due to COVID-19 concerns. We will reschedule and resume programs when it is prudent to do so and as our schedule allows. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please call your branch if you have any questions.

Live Virtual Family Book Trivia Game

Sign up for Virtual Family Book Trivia Game
Families work together to guess the answers to trivia questions about children's literature. There are three rounds and after the final round we will announce the team name of the family who got the most correct answers overall. The prize is the joy of winning. The Virtual Family Book Trivia Game will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. 
 Sensory-Friendly Activity: Sensory Bins
Create different types of sensory bins to promote tactile engagement. All you will need is a shallow plastic bin and some things that engage the senses to fill it with. You can try out lots of different combinations to find out what is most enjoyed.
 
Some Suggested Materials:
  • Water
  • Sand
  • Shells
  • Rocks
  • Small toys
  • Rice (plain or colored)
  • Dry pasta noodles (plain or colored)
  • Dry beans (plain or colored)
  • Cotton balls
  • Shaving Cream
  • Fabric scraps
  • Building blocks
  • Feathers
  • Jell-O
  • And many more!
Note: Be sure to be aware of things that may be possible choking hazards or allergens when designing your bin.

ABC of NC
ABC of NC  is a nonprofit dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services to people with autism spectrum disorder; ensuring service accessibility to individuals from any economic background; offering support and hope to families; and advocating for inclusion and acceptance.

ABC of NC is offering parent and professional classes online, but clinic-services and lessons for preschool and most school age children through the Education Center are being offered on a regular schedule. Please visit their website and Facebook page for up-to-date information about select services being offering. 
 
Autism Society of North Carolina
The Autism Society of North Carolina offers a variety of resources and events for those with sensory processing differences and their families. For more information on the services they offer as well as access to their online calendar visit the Autism Society of North Carolina website.

Autism Society of North Carolina temporarily closed its office and cancelled programs. However, online webinars and virtual meetings are being offered. Please visit their website to find autism-specific resources for families seeking up-to-date information during the current COVID-19 situation. 
 
Brenner Children's Hospital
Teens and Pre-Teens with special needs can join the Saturday Club at Brenner Children’s Hospital. This group meets the third Thursday of every month. For more information about this or other groups please call 336-727-2505. 
 
Wake Forest Baptist Health is allowing limited access to patients in Out-Patient and In-Patient Facilities. Please visit the Brenner Children's Hospital visitation webpage to find more information about the times and requirements necessary for a visit. 
 
iCan House
iClub at iCan House is accepting applications from young people, ages 8 to 14, who are interested in expanding their social skills and making new friends.
 
iCan House also offers Real World Connections, a program for teens with the opportunity for both peer-to-peer and mentor-led interactions. This program focuses on communication, flexibility, and real world life skills among other things. For more information about meeting times or to request an application for either program, please call 336-723-0050 or visit the iCan House website.
 
iCan House is temporarily suspending in-person meetings, visit their Facebook Page to learn more about joining their Virtual Club meetings.
 
Kaleideum 
Kaleideum Downtown offers Sensory-Friendly Nights throughout the year on the first Monday of the month. Admission is $3 per person for members and nonmembers. However, adults (ages 18 and up) can check out a free Kaleideum pass for one week at a local Forsyth County Public Library branch on a first-come, first-served basis. 
 
Kaleideum North is open and operating on limited hours on weekdays and on the weekends. Please check their website to sign up for their e-newsletter or check out their social media to find arts and science activities families can do at home.
