In the town where I was born, Lived a man who sailed to sea,
And he told us of his life, In the land of submarines...
Yellow Submarine by The Beatles
From the Director's Desk
Everyone knows of the Beatles. Depending on your age, you may not want to reveal the year you first heard them. Even saying you remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show puts you in a certain age bracket. Our next speaker however has no qualms revealing he knew the Beatles before Ed Sullivan did!
Scotch Plains resident Paul Groom will present The Beatles: Beginnings on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. He’ll answer the question “Just who were the Beatles before they became the world-famous Fab Four?”
Paul Groom grew up in Liverpool and tells the story of the Beatles’ rise from obscurity to international stardom. He begins from their early lives and influences, to meeting each other and performing as a band, to entering the music business and reaching their first No. 1 hit.
Paul Groom’s unique take on the Beatles is informed by his own experiences as a youth. He attended the same high school as Paul and George; the same Sunday school as John; belonged to the youth club where John met Paul, and lived in the same village as George and John!
If you are young enough that you need to familiarize yourself with the Beatles, the library has several of their albums on CD as well as the video documentary Eight Days a Week: The Touring Years.
