Hello, Welcome to the latest Genealogy and Local History newsletter. Sorry it's so late! Fall is upon us! Don't forget the Palatine Library Genealogy Group meets the first Thursday evening of most months. Please check the website events calendar to confirm the date and time or contact me for more information. It isn't necessary to register, but it's probably a good idea if there is a last minute change or cancellation as happened to the August meeting. One new title added. See below. Also, is there anything you'd like me address in these newsletters? Let me know. Best of luck with your research! Arthur Krull akrull@palatinelibrary.org 847-358-5881 x 193

The article below was copied from the Arlington Heights Herald, October 10, 1927 page 4. This article was found in the Access Newspaper Archive database. Race Track Business This Way Will Arlington Heights please sit up and take notice that all of the business at Arlington track does not come their way. A survey of the local business houses in Palatine reveals the fact that a good share of jockeys and others favor Palatine and this village is benefitting by the business they bring here.
The greatest increase is perhaps noticeable at the local post office, where the money orders are double tje usual number and reach as high as 60 to 70 a day. Postmaster Hitzeman has not enough boxes for the permanent residents and is nearly swamped by the people who call for mail under general delivery. Otto Schroeder is another who has grasped the opportunity before him and has a good trade in medicine for the horses. Dede's Eat Shop is another place that is rushed with the new business. Whoever thought that a race track would bring business to the milk man, but such is the case. Geo. Mess reports that he is nearly mobbed when he enters the stable ground each morning with his load of chocolate milk. Mrs. John Mangels has twenty who board at her house and there are others who are having a part in the entertainment of the horsemen. All of these state that they have found the horsemen and their jockeys men of the highest type and the much heralded "undesirable element" failed to materialize.
