Mysterious & Ordinary Women: Captured in Paint & Poetry — through July 8. Sandy Sheagren, a visual artist and poet who has been drawing, painting, and writing since childhood, developed a fascination for anatomy and the human body from the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. A career in nursing and study of medical illustration gave her a strong knowledge base from which to work. Sheagren is particularly interested in how posture, body language, and color contribute to establishing a mood or feeling. At times, she writes poetry in lieu of a title, to describe the emotion enveloping her subject. Through the diversity and mystery found in this group of paintings, the strength, beauty, wisdom, and power of women is vividly portrayed. Home! The recipe for success by these two design veterans is simple−they cover a range of styles with a mix of good advice, inspiration, humor, and heart. From showcasing a personal collection to using architectural salvage, their ideas will empower you to hone your own decorating style without breaking the bank. Stroll through this photography exhibit to learn how good design is within your reach. On Tuesday, September 10, 7 PM, Hilary will present a program on her personal journey in the world of interior design…with decorating tips and tales from the front. Adult Book Discussion Groups
|
|
Book selections are available at the Reader Services Desk one month prior to meetings. New members are always welcome; just drop in. The 2014 discussion schedule for each group is available if you would like to read ahead. BookBites: Reading Social — Thursday, July 3, 7 PM. Location: The Glenview House, 1843 Glenview Road, Glenview. The July selection is Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo. The author spent three years among the residents of the Annawadi slum, a sprawling, cockeyed settlement of more than 300 tin-roof huts and shacks in the shadow of Mumbai’s International Airport. Read the stories both tragic and poignant--about residents’ efforts to raise families, earn a living, or simply survive. These unforgettable characters all nurture far-fetched dreams of a better life. As one boy tells his brother: “Everything around us is roses. And we’re like the s**t in between.” Boo’s writing is superb and the depth and courage of her reporting from this hidden world is astonishing. At times, it’s hard to believe this is nonfiction. Co-sponsored by the Niles Public Library. Visit facebook.com/nilesglenviewbookbites for details. Meets monthly. Page Turners — Monday, July 7, 1 PM, Community Room East. City of Thieves by David Benioff. During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible. Meets monthly. BOOKit! NonFiction Book Group — Wednesday, July 23, 7 PM, Multipurpose Room. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State – and to do it alone. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her. Meets bimonthly.
