Library Closing — The Library will be closed Friday, October 23 for Staff Training Day. Book Drops will be locked. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed. Now Open! Northern Lights Homework Help Center (grades 1-8) — Tuesdays through December 8, 6-7:30 PM, Youth Program Room. High School volunteers to the (homework) rescue. Thirty-minute sessions for homework, reading, and math skills provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Children may be grouped by subject and grade level. Just drop in. Battle of the Books (grades 4 & 5) Registration — October 1-November 11. This Youth Services tradition is now in its 35th year, but the game remains the same. Establish a team of four members, read the books, and test your knowledge with other teams at the Library. Open to students from participating schools. Please register here. Banned Books Week — Through October 3. Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment—highlighting the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the potential harm of censorship. Visit the special display featuring challenged books through October 4. Sponsored by the American Library Association. Character Counts Week (grades K-8) — October 19-25. Show good character in Glenview all week. Stop by Youth Services to share how you’ve shown good character, enter our drawing for a Character Counts gift basket, and collect a button.

Star Wars Reads Day — Saturday, October 10, 1-4 PM, Community Room. Padawans, Sith, Wookiees, and Jedi are all welcome. Dress as your favorite character or come as you are to join us all afternoon for Star Wars themed fun. Just drop in. Friends of the Glenview Library Special Program: Things That Go Bump - A Visual Survey of Witchcraft, Demons, and the Occult — Thursday, October 15, 7 PM, Community Room. Kickstart your Halloween with a talk celebrating the supernatural in art, music, film, and literature. Lucas Livingston, Assistant Director of Senior Programs in the Department of Museum Education at The Art Institute of Chicago, will bring Halloween to life. Macabre monsters have deep roots in cultures across the world. From Faust’s devil and Grimm’s witches to Japanese demons and hungry ghosts, we will discover a treasure of terrifying traditions beyond Halloween’s haunting history. This presentation of the paranormal will shine a light on beings best left lurking in shadows and under the bed. $20/person includes Halloween-themed refreshments. Exercise and explore your artistic side with dance. Instructors from the Park Center Studio for Dance will demonstrate three dance forms: ballet, contemporary/jazz, and salsa. You will also get a chance to dance. No dance experience necessary; wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Co-sponsored by the Glenview Park District. Register here. My Museum Year — Through Wednesday, November 18. Artist: Elisa R. Boughner. Every artist’s dream is to be invited to exhibit at a museum—a long and arduous process, often taking 2-3 years of review and planning. Glenview’s own fine artist Elisa Boughner is experiencing her museum year, exhibiting at Florida’s Ormand Memorial Art Museum and Chicago’s Field Museum. As a MacArthur Foundation grant recipient, Elisa, along with several other Chicago artists, has been invited by The Field to participate in a cultural exchange exhibit with a group of talented Filipino artists. Coming home to Glenview, Elisa will be sharing several of her museum quality pieces with Glenview Library patrons. If you would also like the opportunity to meet Elisa and learn more about her extensive collection, Elisa will be hosting an open house at her Glenview art studio, 1940 C Lehigh Avenue, on Friday, October 9, 6-11 PM.

Susanna Lang’s poetry reminds us to pay attention, to look out the window. She brings us down to earth and asks us to see our bond with nature. A stone becomes a voice, a sparkle, a release. Few trees capture the imagination as much as the mighty oak. Learn the history of oaks in our region, ways they improve our natural areas and our town, and why oak trees need our help. Did you know that many Native American tribes considered the oak a medicine tree and that the oak still influences many contemporary cultures? In recognition of the newly designated month of Oaktober, join Robyn Flakne, Natural Resources Manager for the Village of Glenview, for an “oakcellent” evening honoring these special trees. Register here. Mozart’s Sister — Tuesday, October 13, 7 PM, Community Room. Called “Horseface” by her little brother Wolfgang, Maria Anna was also a musical prodigy. Master Pianist Chris Garofalo plays Mozart pieces while actress and storyteller Megan Wells, as Maria, tells the engaging story of the Mozart family. What would Oktoberfest be without our favorite German folk performers? Always adding something new to their lively performance, Alpine Thunder returns by popular demand for their ninth appearance at the Library. Not long ago, pumpkins were just for carving on a chilly late October day. Today, pumpkins of every size and shape provide one of the most popular culinary flavorings and ingredients—infusing every course with a uniquely earthy flavor. GLENergy presents Great American Performers with Dr. Burton Fischman — Friday, October 2, 1-2:15 PM, Community Room. Dr. Burton Fischman entertains fans of American music of the 1950s–1970s with a multimedia presentation of songs by Fred Astaire, Liberace, Dean Martin, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and many others. Dr. Fischman weaves music history, anecdotes, whimsical impersonations, and sing-along opportunities into an energetic program. The AACM has been celebrated in 2015 by the DuSable Museum of African American History and at a current show at the MCA Chicago. StoryWalk®: The Little Red Hen by Mary Finch — Through Sunday, November 1. Welcome back to the Storybook Trail in Little Bear Garden at Gallery Park, 2001 Patriot Blvd. Stroll, bounce, hop, or better yet, bike along the path to read this retelling of the classic tale. With gorgeous paper arts illustrations and a happy ending for all, this story is sure to delight the entire family. Presented by the Glenview Park District, the Bike Glenview Initiative, and the Glenview Public Library. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and was developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Sessions continue through November 21. Pre-readers learn sign language with their families—new vocabulary, songs, and play activities each month. Led by Jamie Stevens, ASL interpreter and certified Baby Signs® instructor. Tickets will be given out to Glenview Library cardholders beginning 30-minutes prior to Storytime session. NEW! Russian Storytime with Miss Vlada (ages 3 & up with adult) — Saturday, October 17, 1:30-2:15 PM, Youth Program Room. Miss Vlada will share stories in Russian. Make a craft, too. Just drop in. Smile & Rhyme Storytime (ages 2 & up with adult) — Tuesday, October 20, 10:30-11 AM. Location: Heinen’s Grocery Store, 1020 Waukegan Road, Glenview. Miss Fran shares stories, rhymes, and songs in the Café. Stay for a snack and to chat after the program. Bring a towel or blanket. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Just drop in.
