Library Closings — The Library will be closed December 24-26 for the Christmas Holiday. The Library will close on Saturday, December 31 at 3 PM for the New Year’s holiday and reopen at 9 AM on Tuesday, January 3. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed.

Make the Glenview Public Library your “go-to” place for seasonal cheer and inspiration. ALL AGES SPECIAL WINTER COLLECTION: Socks for Soles — Help warm the soles of our community’s neediest this winter season. Nothing is more reassuring as winter sets in than warm feet, hands, and heads. Fill the collection bin in the Library Lobby with socks, mittens, gloves, hats, and sweaters. New items appreciated—all sizes for all ages. Collected items are distributed by St. Philip’s Clothes Closet on behalf of the Northfield Township Pantry throughout the winter season. Art in the Library: Simply Stitches - The Threads That Bind Us — Through January 10. The Glenview Library has a talented group of needlework artists among its staff. Quilting and stitching have evolved into an expressive art form, connecting the heart and soul of those who create the works with those who use them. Cherished pieces are often passed down from generation to generation. In the spirit of the holiday season, these creative staff artisans are honored to share their work with their community through this quilt and needlework exhibition. Toot! Toot! North Shore & Western Model Railroad Club — Saturday, December 10, 9 AM-4:30 PM & Sunday, December 11, 1-4:30 PM, Community Room. Master storyteller William Pack will explore the curious origins of one of the most popular stories ever written, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Pack will then perform a reading, enhanced with a modern recreation of a magic lantern slide show popular during Dickens’ lifetime. Register here. Much Ado about Mysteries — Thursday, December 8, 7 PM, Community Room East. Discussion Topic- Holiday Crime: More Than Just Mistletoe Mysteries. Meets quarterly. Just drop in. All That Glitters...Is Silver & Gold — Tuesday, December 13, 7-8 PM, Community Room. Ever wonder what your old coins or gold and silver jewelry are worth? Whether you are planning on gifting your collections or trading items in for extra cash, expert Dave Ekstrom will offer advice on collecting and valuing items. There will also be an opportunity to have a coin and gold or silver piece appraised. Bring in an item or two for a free appraisal. Register here. Deck The Halls with Festive Holiday Music — Sunday, December 18, 2-3 PM, Community Room. Tempest Winds, a woodwind trio of flute, clarinet and bassoon, will present a holiday program to celebrate the season. Get ready for familiar seasonal favorites—and don’t forget to sing along! Register here. TEENS Hot Cocoa in a Cone (Ages 13-18) — Thursday, December 29, 2-3 PM, Youth Program Room. Warm up on a cold winter day! Use cocoa, marshmallows, chocolate chips, and sprinkles to make a tasty hot cocoa in a cone creation and decorate your own recipe tag. The perfect gift…or simply treat yourself. Help decorate walking canes to be distributed by Canes from Chrissy. Please note: grades 5-8 must arrive at 9:30 AM for a briefing.

Stop by and play with the Library’s huge LEGO® collection in Glenview’s version of Cloud Cuckoo Land, where no idea is a bad idea. Minecraft Winter Break Challenge (grades 4-8) — Friday, January 6, 2-4:30 PM, Youth Program Room. Back by popular demand! In a small town in South Wales, a barmaid’s love of horse racing, the “sport of kings,” leads to a group of friends banding together to breed a champion race horse. Location: Hackney’s on Lake, 1514 E. Lake Avenue, Glenview. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. This is a beautifully written and deeply moving story about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Adult Literacy Classes — Tuesdays & Thursdays, Through December 8, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM. A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. Sessions will be conveniently held in the Library Lobby. Just drop in.
