Library Closing — The Library will be closed Friday, October 28 for Staff Training Day. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed. Now Open! Drop-In Homework Help Center (grades 1-8) — Tuesdays through December 13, 6-7:30 PM, Youth Program Room. High School volunteers to the (homework) rescue. Thirty-minute sessions for homework, reading, and math skills practice provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Children may be grouped by subject and grade level. Just drop in. No session October 11.

Battle of the Books (grades 4 & 5) Registration — Monday, October 3-Thursday, November 10. Glenview 4th & 5th graders, get ready to read! Teams of four members read the books and test their knowledge with other teams at the Library. Please register here beginning October 3. SPECIAL EVENT! Drop-In Early Literacy Fair: Meet Clifford the Big Red Dog (ages 0-6) — Sunday, October 9, 2-4 PM, Community Room. Stop by to see Clifford and visit hands-on activity stations. Explore the five early literacy skills proven to lay the foundation for school success. Enjoy a family sing-along with musician Steve Beno. Face painting provided by StilesInk. Generously supported by Rotary Club of Glenview-Sunrise. Inked: Tattooing’s Vibrant History — Friday, October 14, 7-8 PM, Community Room. Are tattoos more than a “permanent reminder of a temporary feeling?” From ancient artifacts to current stylistic trends, cultural historian Anna Felicity Friedman, PhD will lead a myth-busting, whirlwind tour through tattoo history. Visit Youth Services throughout the week to share how you demonstrated good character in Glenview. Enter the drawing for the Character Counts book basket and receive a bookmark. Friends of the Glenview Library Special Program: "Diane von Furstenberg: A Life Unwrapped:” with Chicago Author Gioia Diliberto — Wednesday, October 19, Noon, Community Room. Enjoy a light lunch and a most interesting presentation about this fascinating designer who changed the fashion world. Many will remember the classic wrap dress. Wear one if you still have one! Diliberto will show slides, tell stories, and answer questions. Her books will be for sale by The Book Stall. $20 per person. Call 847-998-1514 for program details. Being Mortal: End of Life Decisions — Thursday, October 20, 7-8:30 PM, Community Room. A PBS FRONTLINE documentary follows renowned New York writer and Boston Surgeon Atul Gawande who explores the doctor/patient relationship as death becomes imminent. The film is a profound investigation of the practice of caring for patients nearing life’s end and their families. The documentary screening will be followed by a guided discussion led by JourneyCare facilitators. This important film deals with questions we all ask about the loved ones we care for and ultimately about ourselves. Sculpture at Any Age — Through November 15. Multiple Artists: North Shore Senior Center. The community art theme continues with a display by sculptors from ages 60 to 90, proving that creativity flourishes at any age. Working in a studio environment full of camaraderie and friendship, we invite you to enjoy the lively quality of their art. Nature in Glenview: The Beauty Around Us — Through Wednesday, November 16. Multiple Artists: Co-sponsored by the Glenview Art League and Natural Resources Commission of Glenview. Glenview has a variety of natural resources to discover. We are fortunate to have rivers, woods, wetlands, and prairies to explore. Nature is as close as your own back door. Experience our hometown beauty through the eyes of talented local artists.

Paris-born world traveler, Glenview resident, and poet Ami Kaye is the publisher of Glass Lyre Press, an independent literary press, and editor of the poetry journal Pirene’s Fountain. Soak in the spirit of the Halloween season through the silent movie genre. Film aficionado John Nygro will share clips from the 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera to gain an understanding of the striking emotional range and haunting beauty of this lost art form. In this terrifically fun, sophisticated urban drama, a young woman (Greta Gerwig) is longing to start a family. She falls in love with a married man (Ethan Hawke), then devises a strategy to reunite him with his former wife (Julianne Moore) three years later. The Meddler (100min/PG-13/2016) — Friday, October 21, 2 & 6:30 PM, Community Room. Lonely and heartbroken, an aging widow from New York City (Susan Sarandon) follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after the death of her husband. She begins interfering with her daughter’s life, but soon meets other people who are more in need of her assistance, giving her a new purpose in life.

Location: Hackney’s on Lake, 1514 E. Lake Avenue, Glenview. Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler. Told from multiple characters in their restless period of their early 30s, this is the story of a group of friends born and raised in Little Wing, WI. Their voices and memories create a rich, overlapping narrative that is a love letter to the Midwest and its small, mostly forgotten towns. Co-sponsored by the Niles Public Library. Rachel is a washed-up thirtysomething who creates a fantasy about the seemingly perfect couple she sees during her daily train ride into London. When the woman goes missing, Rachel manages to insert herself into the investigation of the woman’s disappearance. Meets monthly. All Things Spanish — Wednesday, October 19, 7-8:30 PM, Multipurpose Room. Native and non-native Spanish speakers are invited to join the fun while practicing language skills and expanding their love for Spanish/Latino culture. Adult Literacy Classes: Fall Session — Tuesdays & Thursdays, Through December 8, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM (no class November 24). A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. A small, friendly group led by a teacher and volunteer tutors meets twice weekly.
