Library Closing — The Library will be closed Wednesday, October 22 for Staff Training Day. Book Drops will be locked. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed. Now Open! Northern Lights Homework Help Center — Tuesdays through December 9, 6-7:30 PM, Youth Program Room. High School volunteers can help shine a light on your student’s homework (grades 1-8). Thirty-minute sessions for homework, reading, and math skills practice will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Children may be grouped by subject and grade level. Just drop in.
EXTENDED! StoryWalk®: Flying Lessons by Gilbert Ford — through October 26. Enjoy autumn at Storybook Trail in Little Bear Garden at Gallery Park, 2001 Patriot Blvd. Walk, skip, jog, or better yet, bike along the path to read a silly, but ultimately heartwarming story about a big and noisy steel “bird” with twin engines who has trouble fitting in with a flock of doves. Scan the QR code at the end of the storybook to be entered into a special drawing. Presented by the Glenview Park District, the Bike Glenview Initiative, the Glenview Public Library. The StoryWalk® Projectwas created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and was developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.Library Board of Trustees Election — Library Trustee elections are held at the regular Consolidated Election in odd-numbered years. Three Board positions will be determined by the election on April 7, 2015.Trustees are elected for a term of four years, with Board terms staggered in accordance with the provisions of the Illinois Local Library Act. The first day to circulate nomination papers is Tuesday, September 23, 2014. Certificates of nomination and nomination papers must be filed for the April 7, 2015 Consolidated Election with the Village Clerk, Glenview Village Hall, Village Manager’s Office, 1225 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL between December 15 – 22, 2014. NEW! The Music Room: Tracing the Lines: Acoustic Guitar from Fahey to Gunn — Wednesday, October 8, 7-8 PM, Multipurpose Room. Join AV Librarian Michael White for The Music Room, a new quarterly listening & music discussion group. The Music Room will explore various genres (and sub-genres) of music found in the Library’s Popular Music CD collection. The inaugural discussion will introduce a new generation of acoustic guitar players who emerged from the corners of an American independent music scene paying tribute to John Fahey and his contemporaries, Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho. Learn background information on Fahey, as well as some of the best-known names from the newest crop of highly skilled acoustic players channeling his spirit (Daniel Bachman, Steve Gunn). The group will listen to selected tracks and discuss the scope and impact of Fahey’s music. Just drop in. Character Counts Week (grades K-8) — October 19-25. Show good character in Glenview all week. Stop by the Youth Services Desk for a special button and to enter a drawing for the Character Counts gift basket. Friends of the Glenview Library: Pearls: Legends and Lustre — Friday, October 24, 12 PM, Glenview Library Community Room. Nature creates in a most unusual way, and this gem has a unique history. Pearls have inspired the discovery of continents, caused fortunes to be lost, and consumed mistresses with jealousy. Kathleen M. Kamal, Professor of Metalworking and Jewelry Design, College of DuPage, will explore the pearl’s illustrious history. $20 per person; luncheon included. Works on Paper — Through Tuesday, November 4. View an exhibit of drawings and watercolors by Glenview Park Center adult students enrolled in Drawing 1 & 2 and Watercolor 1 & 2 classes. Through step-by-step instruction and direct observation, students of instructor Gayle Huffman showcase an exciting array of “plein air” botanicals, traditional still lifes, and an impressive 2014 series of bird drawings and paintings. A great teaching exhibit to view for anyone desiring to take the plunge into community art. Ron’s Voice: The Poet Within Series — Tuesday, October 7, 7 PM, Community Room. The Library’s poetry reading series was started in 2002 by Glenview poet Ron Offen, who introduced many different poets but never read his own work. Ron’s poetry will now be celebrated with Ron’s wife Beverly, playwright friend Bill Lederer, and poet friend Jim Reiss reading favorite poems of Ron’s, dating from 1949 to work published posthumously just this past July. Best known as an eccentric whose love for the arts (especially architecture and the music of Richard Wagner) is legendary, the young King Ludwig had a charmed but also tragic existence. German Historian Anette Isaacs, MA, will present fascinating insights about the eternally enigmatic Fairytale King’s amazing life on the 150th anniversary of his ascent to the German throne. Your favorite German performers are back to share Germany’s rich regional musical heritage with upbeat music, interesting lore, and more. Virtuoso: The Life of Clara Schumann — Tuesday, October 28, 7 PM, Community Room. Clara Schumann (1819–1896) was the prodigy daughter of a remarkable piano teacher, Friedrich Wieck. The young Robert Schumann became a resident piano pupil at the Wieck household. Clara, a brilliant performer, and Robert, a gifted composer, fell deeply in love. Through triumph and tragedy, their marriage became one of the great love stories of all time. Senior Housing Series–Moving: Six Steps to Success — Friday, October 3, 1-2 PM, Community Room. Erin Marcus, Certified Relocation and Transition Specialist with Caring Transitions, will address the basic steps to be considered as you begin planning for your move. We all know moving can seem overwhelming at times, but when we break it down into a process, the seemingly impossible becomes possible. Resource Specialists from CJE SeniorLife will provide individual counseling to adults ages 60 and over, their families, and caregivers. Topics include the selection of appropriate retirement benefits, picking the right health insurance and Medicare programs, determining housing needs, and identifying supportive resources. FALL FILM SERIES: Once Upon a Time: In a Land Far, Far Away — Travel to foreign lands, real or fantasy, experiencing cultural differences on this intriguing journey. We will also come “home” to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with a story of migrant farm workers, so many with roots south of our borders. A casual, audience-led discussion follows matinee screenings. Commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month—and honor Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers of America. Starring Michael Peña as the passionate and soft-spoken Chavez in this testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the world. Co-starring John Malkovich as the leader of the opposition. Belle (104min/PG/2013) — Friday, October 17, 2 & 6:30 PM, Community Room. Inspired by a true story, Belle is the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Belle’s lineage affords her privileges; yet her skin color prevents her from full participation in society. She falls in love with an idealistic young man, and together they help to end slavery in England. A beautiful period piece with stirring performances.

Four Londoners try to make adult lives outside of Caldwell, the council estate of their childhood. Jules Jacobson, an aspiring comic actress who comes to realize she’s got more creative temperament than talent; her almost boyfriend Ethan Figman, the true genius in the bunch; musician Jonah Bay, son of a famous Baez-ish folksinger; and the Wolf siblings, Ash and Goodman, attractive and mysterious.
