On the Journey: A Study in Sumi-e, Haiku & Haiga — Through Tuesday, January 6. This exhibit explores a style of brush painting that originated in 13th-century Japan. Closely associated with Zen Buddhism and similar in concept to Japanese calligraphy, Sumi-e (black-ink pictures) and Haiga rely on simplicity of thought, action, and form to create works of understated beauty. Painter and poet Lidia Rozmus traveled to Japan to learn about its culture and arts. These experiences enriched her understanding of the spirit that lives in these ancient Japanese techniques—where the essence of form is expressed with a single brush stroke. The universality of this art form and the serenity evoked by its stunning simplicity send a special message of peace and tranquility as we greet the holiday season and the New Year.
